My starter's been actin funny, and my battery's been getting hot lately, melting the ground wire hot. Here's a sound clip of the starter, i've never heard anything sound simular to this...

What do you think's going on? That starter/engine sound horrible... btw the battery is fine, putting out the proper voltage ammount, not anywhere near dead.

Hahaha...yea that does sound like some kind of horror sound effect.

Try turning the motor over by putting a socket on the crank pulley and see if it spins ok or if it feels like it is seized.

If I were in your situation and the above did not yield any success, I would take off the starter and see if the gear is engaging/disengaging properly. If you have a local junkyard that you can go to, try getting a used starter and putting that in. At our local u-pull it, you can return items if its 30 days or under.

The engine runs fine, takes a tad bit longer to start but it still pulls like a freigh train.

it sounds like maybe the starter gear is hanging up on the flywheel that would sound awful and that would heat it up pretty good. i agree with the other guy get a junk yard starter and throw that in, if you have the same problems double check that you shimmed it correctly if thats not it, pray to the dsm gods or hope someone else replies. :dsm:

mine sounded just like that. i took mine out and took it apart to see if the bushings on the ends of the starter were wore down to the point of metal on metal contact. when i opened it up they were fine but it was so cruddy in there that i couldnt even believe that it was spinning. i took it completly apart, cleaned it really good with a rag, lubed up the 3 gear reductions and the bendix drive, then lubed up the little metal ball and put the thing back together. my car started up almost 10 seconds quicker and sounded normal afterwards. hope that helps

oh yea, i used white lithium grease to lube it up if you decide to do it. it took me 1 hour to do it and it was free.

Yikes, that sounded like some sort of sound effect from Doom 3.

Sounds like its just weak though. or your grounds are crappy.
