So the other day my car started fine and I drove it to a firends where I it say for about 2 hrs.

When I was leaving it wouldnt start. The starter solinoid would click but nothing would happen. I check the voltage of the battery and it was at 12 volts. He had a inclined drive way so i rolled out and droped the clutch and go the car started... I drove it home fine with no problems.

When I shut it off, I check if it would turn back on and it wouldnt. So I figured it was the starter solinoid. I didnt bother checking it becasue I was replacing old parts already and just ordered a new starter.

Whe I got it in today and got in the car to turn her over. it did the same thing. Just clicks once.

Only thing i though was weird was that the new starter had a plug comming off of it that looked like it could connect to the starter switch on the starter. and the old one looked like it had a wire there but it was missing.

I did a lot of reading and I read that the cap's in the ecu going bad could have something to do with it, however wouldnt that also keep the car from running when I started it.

The battery is new and I recently had the alternator checked.

I dont know what the problem could be. any help is appreciated

if it was the ECU I don't think you could have rolled it and dumped the clutch... the ecu would have stopped the fuel/fire of the car. so ecu is prob fine..

I'm new to DSMs, but it sounds like wiring or starter niod from what mechanical experience I have from previous vehicles.

thats the thing though, its a new out of the box just installed it today , i checked the power wire and the solinoid casing to check if it had 12 volts andit did ... but when I turn the key it just clicks once and nothing

I figured it wasnt the ecu once the car started with a rolling start... but I dont know what the problem could be.

I spent like 150 + 35 dollar core charge so this starter better not be bad.

=/

but like i said there is one wire that is on the starter that I have no idea where its supposed to go, or if its supposed to go anywhere at all..

so if anyone knows.... I would hate to have to take the whole thing apart =/

but if i have to inorder to get a pic to show everyone what I am talking about I will.

Has anyone had a problem anywhere near to this?

I just want my car to run for once =P

It has been down more then it has been up thie year. It is one problem after another.

First my tire blew out becasue the ball joints were going bad so i replaced the ball joints, then took it to get aligned they said the structs were going bad. So i replaced them. Then I drove it home and when I got home the radiator started leaking. I take a look and the bottom of it is rotted out. I could practially poke my finger through it.

I waited a while till I had enough money and bought a fluidyne radiator. I hooked it up with the stock fans and they fans were like an inch or 2 away from the manifold so i decided to take it back off however the drain plug I received happed to be faulty and the wingnut that spun the spout just spun...

So after I finally got the new drain plug, and bought some new radiator rans... I got the flex-a-lite kit. I put the car all back together turn it on and then walk to the front of the car to see a puddle of coolant forming under the car... pissed off i turn the car off and look ... Its a hose that runs to the oil filter housing... and ofcourse I cant reach it without taking the entire car apart again. including taking off the alternator.

I replace the hose and get the car together and I was happy to have it togethere took it out and drove it for about 5 minutes... stoped and checked everything the radiator was burning up.... the fans wernt turning on. I was pissed... i pushed the ac button it turned on and then I drove it home slowly and parked it for a week. I ordered all the sensors that went with the cooling system... then I got it together and the fans worked one of the sensors was bad. I just replaced them all.

The next day my gf takes the car to work and calls me saying that it started steaming when she got to work. I told her id come get her, look and the only hose that I didnt replace had a hole in it and was spraying the manifold. It went from the thermostat housing to some small pipe i didnt even follow it becasue I didnt care I just wanted the car to be running for once.

I finally had the car together and drove it around for the next couple days, only to have it not start the one time and its been sitting for 3 weeks now.....

I just ordered a bunch of parts so I would work on the car over spring break and would like to have the car running. I dont know what is wrong I think I might just pull the starter that I put in and take it to autozone and have then check it out... i dont know This is all just pissing me off.....

I read this same thing in another thread, guys car just wouldnt start at random times but would start other times, so he did everything from replacing ground wires power wires and battery, to altenator and starter and had swapped out starters cause he still had the same problem untill he thought about looking at the turbo timer that he had installed and it was a bad TT which would allow him to start the car sometimes but not all the time so he got a new TT and alls well, peace.... :thumb: :dsm: :thumb:

looks like you have the exact same problem I have.
Car would not turn over just click flip of the lights(dashboard) took out the starter and brought it to rebuilt place they replaced the positive wire in it!! and I reinstalled it and boom car starts right up. Today car is doign the same thing.
before all of this started the car would not start randomly.....but whenever I would take out the negative and sand it with sand paper and reinstall boom car starts right back up...

so I wanna know if anybody knows wich wires goes where from starter to battery.???....
Looks to me like a bad negative wire or positive......like the rebuilder told me.... Good cars but the wiring is 90% the problem with those cars they just get all corroded.

so that being said ....am replacing all grounds on my 1990 talon TSI!!

ok so i decided to pull the new starter and test it outside of the car... i put voltage to the start post it just moved forward... to where it would engage with the flywheel.. i then looked at this wire that also looked to hook up to the starter switch... so i put it on there and then applied voltage... and it moved forward and started spinnign .... so there you have it ..

a cable that wasnt on the old started but on the new one

and hookes up to the only spot the starter switch could hook up

so im about to cut the clip on it and soider it and toss it back in the car...

too bad after it starts i cant take it for a spin becasue i was changing the front control arm bushing and one of the bolts that hold in the arm was stripped when i got it out

so i have to go to the store and find one that fits it..

anyone know where I might find one I think the parts dept at the dealers by me are closed in 10 minutes so thats a no go...

but theres always tomorrow

Ok I soidered the wire and tossed it in the the car. That was my first mistake I didnt just test it right then. I get the car all back toegther get in turn the key same thing......

annoyed i pull the starter back out and hook up the wires to test it again... I ran a wire from the battery to the starter and it worked fine. Then I took the wire and stuck it in the start wire from the car. and had my gf turn the key... it just moved forward and did nothing...

now that I know its not the starter and its not the ground wire or the power wire...

how the hell do i fix it?

could it be something else like maybe the starter relay thats inside the car...

I never had any intermittant problems with the starter or anything it just stoped working.

Im getting to the point where I might take it in. I have spent 4 days working on it and its in the same condition as it was when i started =/
