I recently pickup a 98 Eclipse GST with 128k, I have know idea on maintaince history or what not. When I original got it hardly made any boost (under half on the factory gauge), I replaced the boost controller (from NAPA) and now I make about 7/8 on the gauge. This is when the misfiring/hesitation start.

My car only hesitates when I really get on it, say around 3800-4500RPM and accelerating. It more proment when it colder out say 15f or colder really bad at 10 below. I occasnialy get the check engine light that will come on (misfire #2 cylinder when read). I change the plugs(Autolight 3923) and plug wires(MSD 8.5mm), other then that it burns a little oil,(noticeable when idling for a long time but not normal driving, puff a minor bit when stepped on it).

Any ideas on what causeing the hesitation? or any direction to look.

Thanks,
Clinth

Well, first things first. DSM's are pick on maintainance. If you're not sure what's been done then do it. I just bought a 95 TSI, the dealership did a motor swap for another 95 TSI a week before I bought it and I was the only one to drive it other than the dealer. I assumed that the motor was in good shape because of the swap. Wrong.
I've had the car a month I'm at 1,400 in maintainance issues right now.

First off, without any kind of mods Don't upgrade your wires. Stock wires are better for the stock dsm than upgraded wires.

Do a tranny flush/filter
Compression test the coolant sys.
Change the timing belt (with the timing belt you might as well change out the balance belt and the water pump, and any seals that may need it like your cam seals or crank seals etc.... but only if they need it.)

Oh yeah, and get an aftermarket boost gauge :) The factory isn't a gauge, it tells you if you're pushing any boost, but not how much.

I'm sure there are some other people here that can suggest more things that *need* to be done on a car with unknown maintainance history. Most likely with all this fun stuff done you'll fix the problem.

Coolant system checks out, flushed it, and pressured test, You right- I need to go thru and do a complete tune/system check.

Do the make a kit that includes timing belt, water pump ect?

ASHICK -Not sure what the aberivation are for.

Thanks for the input.
