Well my problem is still here after I installed my Walbro 190 fuel pump. I have a 1990 Talon TSi AWD. Before it would only occur when I was on the highway for 20 or so minutes. But the car cuts out, feels like theres a rev limiter at 2-3k, the boost builds up as I push on the gas(if I floor it, I see ~12psi of boost), and I have to floor it for a few seconds before it will kick in and actually accerlerate like normal.

Now I got it into town while it was still doing this and it sounded like I was building boost when I pushed on the gas. The turbo would spool up and the bov would release a good amount of air, all this while going 10mph and no acceleration.

Next thing I am going to do is change my fuel filter, but if that doesnt work, what else could it be?

Check you car for a boost leak. Im 100% positive you have one somewhere. If you are not familiar with this test, I can walk you through it. Its a very simple process, and can save you alot of head ache down the road.

Hmm I did make a boost leak tester but have yet to use it. How can you tell if I have a fried cat? I do have a lot of white smoke come out of my exhaust now that it is cold, but only under hard acceleration, seems like more then the normal amount of exhaust smoke.

This weekend I will replace the fuel filter and run a boost leak test. Hopefully it will be somewhat warm :thumbdown

Thanks for the replys, I appriciate it :talon: :laser: :dsm:

I went driving around today for about 30-45min. No highspeed driving or anything, just out crusing since it was really nice out. And it started to do that same crap again. Heres a pic of the cluster while it is doing it. I have the gas floored and I am sitting in front of my garage in neutral.

So I went to AutoZone and bought a fuel filter. Replaced it and the gas that came out of the old filter was dark gray, is that normal? I didnt think so, but heres a pic.

I havent driven it much yet but it feels the same. Ill take it on a small road trip sunday to see how it drives.

boost leak test it. did you do any thing under the hood recently? check the plug to the mas sensor I know I forgot to plug it in once and it would not let me rev past 3k. boost leak testers are your friends.

It acted up just like this before the fuel pump install so I dont think it is a fuel pump problem. Havent done a boost leak test yet, I should be doing that soon, But I wouldnt think a boost leak would cause this sinc it doesnt act up all the time, just when I drive it for long periods of time.

It drives just fine when just drivign to work, to walmart, ect. It revs to redline and boosts fine. This problem only seems to occur when driving it 45min + and its not overheating or anything, so I do not know what to think...

Ok, Grey gas. Not a good thing? Have you seen gas before? It's not grey. I'd probably check some injectors, or if you're going to upgrade them in the future, probably do that soon, I'd make a guess that they're clogged, but, maybe not. Something i'd check though. Maybe take off the fuel rail and give it a cleaning as well, while you're at it.

It seems like you have been struggling with this for a while. I've suggested in your other thread to perform a boost leak test but you still have not done so. Let's see if we can help you figure this out but you must take our suggestions seriously.

1. If memory serves me right you're running a 50 trim? Please complete your profile so we know what we're dealing with, detail mod list. We can do some simple tests with the turbo but can't help until I know if it's internal or external.

2. Perform that long overdue boost leak test and fix every leak you find, system should hold 20psi when complete.

3. Perform a compression test.

Post back results.

Sorry, this isnt the car in my profile. Its my dailey driven stock 90 TSi AWD 5spd. I made a boost leak tester awhile back but never got around to using it. My friend has an air compressor so I will do that this week, along with the compression test.

I noticed the boost gauge in your video was leaping all over the place. If memory serves, that isn't a true boost gauge, but simply a guestimation your computer is making. So, is there any chance it could be your computer at the center of all this? I have heard of leaking caps being a problem, but I am not sure what the symptoms would be. My talon still doesnt run yet, so take all that with a grain of salt. ;)

Someone said the stock boost gauge was related to the RPMs not the actual boost. Which would make a lot of sense in my case and my problems would seem to point to the ECU?

I was going to swap my ECU with my friends 93 TSi awd ecu, but he is selling his car so I cant do that anymore :/

Looks like some sort of corrosion. Is that what leaky capacitors look like?
Yep, thats serious capacitor leakage. It not only eating up the ground trace that is darkened in the picture but busy eating away at the stuff on the other side of IC110.

Sweet, looks like Ive finally solved my problem ROFL

Still going to do a compression test and boost leak test this weekend though. Thanks for all your guys help! Ill keep you updated on how the car likes the 93 ECU.

You'll need to swap two pins (6 and 14) on your ECU harness to use the '93 ECU. Expect to have problems with your tach working normal with it even after swapping the pins. 90 cars have problems with later ECUs due to the unique way the ignition circuit works on that car.

Keep us posted plz.
I seem to have the same problem, the driving that is, haven't got around to checking my ECU.

But if that fixes the problem, i would really like to know :)

Well just swapped in my buddies perfect, no leaky capacitor, 93 Eprom ecu. Just swapped pins 6 and 14 and it started right up. Only problem is my tach doesnt like to work when get on the throttle, it will just drop and come back up when I let off. Guess I need a 91+ coilpack if I want a 91+ ECU.

Im going to take it on a test road trip tomorrow after work to see how she behaves. Hopefully it will run fine <crosses fingers>

What you need is a 91+ PTM and connector, wire the tach output back directly to the ECU and let the '90 tach gate on the '90 coil pack drive the tach. Otherwise you have to swap the whole ignition system and tach in the cluster with 91+ parts or run a '90 ECU.
