Well it seems my tranny crapped out on me today. Either that or the axel but more likely the tranny.
Problem:
I was parked with some friends no problems with any vibrations/noise/loss of power.
We go to leave to goto the track and run and as I pull off I hear a slight grinding noise coming from the driver's side. I have a 95 Eagle Talon TSI FWD Automatic. I turn off the radio and heater and listen more closely as I accelerate up a hill the noise starts kicking in at about 2000 rpm. If I accelerate lightly on a flat road no noise. If I am on a hill LOTS of noise. Still, no loss of power just a horrible grinding noise as if my axel if spinning free or my gears are grinding. If the accelerator is pressed with any kind of force it grinds. As I was heading home after having to cancel my races for the day I'm driving down a flat road being very gental and I hear a piece of metal come lose and rattle down and out of my car, dinging off of anything and everything. Couldn't find the piece of metal that came off when I went back. Car is parked right now and all shops are closed so I can't get it on a lift and look at it.

Does anyone have any advice, suggestions, anything they could offer? Place to buy a new tranny or axel or whatever the problem is? Cheap but reliable.

Thanks for y'alls help

Damien

GET OFF THR ROAD IMMEDIATELY!! This same EXACT thing happened to me this weekend. I also have a 95 talon tsi a/t and after all those problems you jsut described, i had to drive it home which was 20 minutes away. Soon while you are in drive the car will spike at around 3500 and it willneutral, the revs shoot real high but your speed drops...as if you mashed the gas in neutral. From now on the car wont go over 35-40mph before it does that spike again. Next the car wil stop shifting, not completely, but it will shift thru 1,2 and at about 3500 in 3 it spikes. I had to drive all the way home in 2 doin about 25 so the revs wouldnt be way up and burn up the motor. If you continue to drive any longer, like to a shop, your trans-pan will start leaking and tranny oil will spill everywhere. I hihgley recomend trailering it to any transmission shop near you, ANYWHERE BUT COTTMAN!! They are the bigese con-artists in the world and will rip you off for every penny. Trailer the car to any tranny shop and let the guy look at it, have him run computer diagnostics test, check the transpan for metal shavings, and see if any fluid is burnt.--it shoud be red if its not you have a problem--my transpan had shavigs, which is a sign of the teeth on your gears grinding together and wearing down. this explains the spike and why the car wont shift into 3rd. get help immediately before yours gets any worse. If its bad, i recomend either a TRE tranny or a SHEPRacing tranny. www.tre.com www.shepracing.com
good luck with that. those ae the two cheapest ive found for good racing trannys, any other place like a cottman or something will charge between $1100-2200. (thats what cottman man told me)
good luck

Well we tore into the motor today to replace the timing belt and such and my problem had nothing to do with the tranny. I sheared the bolts on my motor mount and everytime the engine would move the mount would push the lower timing belt casing into the pulleys and such. I got lucky

Thanks for the post venom

As to your tranny, if you just want a rebuilt one look at Phenoix Transmissions. I don't have a website but they were gonna get me one for 895 when I checked yesterday

ahh you made out lucky. did it cost you anything to fix your problem?? if so how mcuh becuase it would be great news to hear that thats my problem and not a tranny. i had all plans for the weekend on intake pipes and bov and timers, then i had this problem and now i have no money.

Well, I had to special order the studs and the case but I asked the guy to get me some stronger studs than the stock ones. I told him to just thrown them in and I'll pay for it so I'll find out exactly how much everything costs on Thursday when I pick the vehicle.

But yeah, I got really lucky.

This weekend I'm getting a paintjob finished up (gotta respray the hood) and my speedometer fixed (the crank at the bottom of the sensor is gone so the dealership I got it from is gonna fix it) I'll be replacing the motor mounts/radiator/BOV and adding a turbo timer.
