BAD wasgate actuator?

I think my wastegate actuator is toast but I want to make sure before I start buying things I will not need. I by-passed my manual boost controller and hooked the wastegate directly up to manifold vaccum and it will not boost any lower than 18-19 psi [evoIII16g]. Does this mean the wasgate actuator is no good?

I have no exhaust or vaccum leaks as well.

Also before I could hit a full 20 psi around 3600 RPM, now I automaticlly hit 10psi when I mash the gas and then starts building boost up to 20psi slowly and gets the full 20psi around 5k rpm. Would this be caused by a bad wastegate actuator?

All help is appreciated.

P.s. if it is bad where can I buy a one? I looked on Ebay and a couple site sponsors and came up empty handed. I would rather buy a new one that I know will work than some used one that I have no idea of the history of.

THANKS!

Are you hitting fuel cut?

You have boost creep. If you're hitting 10psi first then your actuator is ok. Did you just install something?

Its not fuel cut. Check car profile for mods.

I had it set for 20 psi daily driving but its starting to get warmer again so I wanted to turn the boost to 16 and retune from there. Other than that nothing new has been done. Before it use to hit 20 psi right away now it does not. it hits 10 and climbs from there.

I understand now. You're saying this is the reason why you bypass the mbc to test, I thought you meant this was the condition after you bypass the mbc.

When you say no vaccum leak, was that a result of a real boost leak test? Sounds like you originally had a leak that starts at 10 psi and overcame by air flow as rpm increase. You're creeping when bypassing the mbc because the lower the boost setting the worst the creeping. I would suspect the creep to disapear if you set it at 18psi or higher. Hope that make sense.

As was stated it is creep. The 10psi is probably the wastegate setpoint. Your mbc is doing nothing (turned down too low). Then, it is climbing because not enough exhaust is making it out the wastegate hole and instead spinning the center.

Thanks for the replys guys. Yes I performed a boost leak test and have no leaks.

I even did try highering the boost through the boost controller but it had no affect. It still did the exact same thing. I would go WOT and it would hit 10psi and build from there and make a full 20psi around 5k to 5500 rpm. Its annoying I and it bothers me :(

Aother possibility is that the mbc had crapped out on you and you are running at 10psi(the stock actuator) with or without the mbc and you're creeping as the result of this. Good luck.

3" Downpipe + 3" Exhaust + internal gate = boost creep.

I've a friend that had the same setup from SBR and could not keep it under 20psi.
You can try to further port the O2 housing to direct the exhaust down the bypass.

BTW.. looking at your mods why are you upset at 20psi? I ran 20psi on my 16G for years on 550s and 1/2 the intercooler with no probs

Well I tried the wastegate actuator from my 1990 talon and it does the same thing. I know its boost creep now. But why the slow spool up now? I use to get 20 psi easily before 4k rpm but now it takes a while. I tried adjusting the boost controller with the same outcome.

*edit* i do not want 20psi daily on california gas even though my car can "handle" it. I would rather be slower and safer than faster and sorry.

Have you tried preloading the actuator? I've had (2) 14Bs and a 16G... none of which would completely seal the WG without a little coaxing (e.g. bending the WG arm/bracket).
Another possibilty (???) is that you're ignition/cam timing is off. When my TBelt was off a couple teeth my 16G spooled what my 50-trim does now.

Ahh crappy big$$$ left coast gas :thumbdown

Havent tried bending the wastegate arm.....ill try that though.

Try another known working mbc.

to check and see if the wastegate is opening, get an air compressor and shoot air into the actuator. You'll be able to see the arm move if the wastegate is opening and closing!!
