I have a 97 TSI Awd. Only mods are 3 inch turbo back and a fuel pump rewire. The car starts and will run fine but it throws a CEL for a misfire in cylinder #1. It idles at about 800 and sounds like a Subaru. It isnt really choppy, it just isnt smooth like it should be. The splugs and wires are fine. My other thoughts were coil pack, fuel injector, possibly timing belt off a tooth? Please help me. Its not really effecting performance too much but its enough to annoy me. Thanks for any help.

It sound like a Plug or Wire.

Not to underestimate your ablilty to check wires and plugs but how do you know they are fine?

I would swap wires with a know good wire like number 1 with number 2 you'll have to change it completely and not just at the plug side. Then erase the code and drive the car and see if the code follows with the wire. If it does you have a faulty wire. If it doesn't then do the ssme with the plugs or just change them with new one there cheap anyways.

If that does solve the problem next would be to check you injector. Simple way to do it is to unplug injector #1 while it idling and watch/feel the motor. If it changes it not a faulty injector. If it doesn't change then you either have a dead injector or your not getting a signal from the ECU.

If not and injector i would do a compression check next.

I highly doubt it your coil pack because they USAULLY kill more than one cylinder. and would most likely get a CEL for a P0300 multiply misfire.
