Well my car is down cause its getting a bottom end rebuild but when my car was running i noticed a weird oil pattern. After a cold night, when i checked the oil through the dipstick in the morning, it would look kinda low, but when i started it up and took it for a drive, after 6 hours i checked again and it was full? This happened like everyday to the point it confused me so i kept adding oil. I mean i would think that overnight the oil would return to its place but why did the dipstick read low in the morning and when i checked it like a day or 2 later, it was WAYYYYYYYYY over full? I dont understand if this is normal. This is something that is worrying me right now and i might have to deal with even after my engine rebuild. Could that be a reason why my Last motor that didnt even last me a month had a bottom end knock? I mean like a bad oil pump or something. What could be causing this problem, its annoying me.

Please help my fellow DSM'ers

make sure when you're checking your oil, that you're doing it on level ground. cuz if you're on an incline, it will be different each time. also, you're gonna get different oil levels when you check your oil when your engine is warm and when it's cold.

the thing of it is, that before when i checked the oil in the morning, even in cold temps, it would be full, but on some days, it would be so low. For this reason, it drove me nuts and i didnt know wether i needed to add oil or not. So one day when it showed low in the morning, i didnt even add a drop of oil. And a few hours later in the day, i checked my oil level after a couple of hours when the car was shut, and it showed Full again? I dont understand if being warm or cold would make that huge of a difference?

It's not a cool/warm situation. You need to check it on a level surface, and wipe down the stick before checking. Also, be sure you're fully-seating the dipstick.

Beyond these guidelines, you'll need to consult George Noory.
