i just need this thing fixed so ill mail 5 bucks to if somebody can REALLY explain well what exactly i must do. since i checked my ecu for eprom, all the lights in the dash area dont turn on. when i was trying to pull the wires from the bottom of the ecu i screwed something up and a electrical spark came out of that area of wires. thats when i lost my tail lights and dash lights. the previous owner had like a 100 wires under the dash i had no idea what the hell he tried to do.anyways i ended taking the thing to best buy to get my head unit installed. the guy said that it has so many extra wires it was crazy. he said the previous owner used home wires or what ever......anyways. after the guy installed my head unit, the tail lights came back. but now my dash lights are still dead. can somebody give me a VERY detailed guide on how to check everything? stuff like what wire to follow, where it goes, how to check what fuse. PLEASE help! i need this thing fixed and ill send 5 bucks if someone can help me figure this out! (im super noob w/wires and shit but im not going to pay mitsu 190 to find the problem  ) thanks alot! :talon:

first thing you need to check is the fuse under the hoold that says tail. This fuse controls your dash lights and your tail lights, it could just simply be blown. If not considering you had a new deck installed I would check the green/white wire in the deck wiring harness, if this wire is grounded on something or connected to the deck it will cause this problem. The stock wiring harness had no ground wire and I would not be suprised if the guy at best buy used this as a ground. I would disconnct your deck and turn your lights on to see if your tail fuse blows, if it does it is this wire. Im almost positive it was green/white but im not 100%, i know that it is the decks dimmer/illumination wire.

also i realized you have a 1g and my car is a 2g so the wire might be a different color.

Save your $5, buy a factory manual and read yourself crazy. Buy yourself a good quality 12v test light and probe each side of each fuse. Some will be hot with the key off and others will need to be checked with the key on. Don't forget to buy some spares. You should also have at least a cheap multi-meter for other tests.

From what you describe the $190 might be a bargain but if you plan on keeping the car then the above purchases will be the minumums to help you get this sorted out. I don't have a manual for your car so can't get more specific, you will have a great deal of grief if it involves the bulb check circuit.

The previous post gives you some specifics which may help, do consider unplugging any new equipment which was added while testing.

Cheers,
GTM

if the fuse under the hood is blown wouldnt both my tail and dash lights be out? only my dash lights dont work. when i first f'ed it up, both tail and dash went out. after the best buy guy put the head unit in, the tails were back. so he fixed something. grounded means what exactly? :( do you mean the green/white wires should be hooked up to the head but shouldnt have anyother wires connected to it? "disconnect your deck and turn your lights on to see if your tail fuse blows" which tail fuse? the one under the hood? how can i tell if its "blown"?

In my 2g the fuse is labeled tail and it is under the hood but im not sure if it is the same in a 1g, someone else might be able to chime in. If the green/white wire is connected it should not be connect to anything at all because it is the dimmer/illumination wire and is used on the factory deck not an aftermarket. If you remove a fuse and look at it the thin wire in the middle should be completely intact and connected, if it is broken and there is any sign of seperation or blackness on the fuse it is blown. A grounded wire is a wire that touches metal that is connected to the frame in the car in some way. It might not be directly but it could be through another wire. Again, I dont know if any of this is the same for you, this is just how it is in my 2g.
