its a 1.8 SOHC

1st problem

if its cold out it takes like 10 minutes of cranking before it will even try to start
then when i do get it started if i hit the gas it shuts off till it warms up

2nd problem

the motor pops through the intake this is the timing ...correct?? and is my 1st probelm associated with the 2nd

Man that is the most annoying title I have ever seen. If I was a mod I would probably lock this out of annoyed confusion.

If it's backfiring it could very well be the timing.
I would also do a compression test. I have seen several motors eating it that took forever cranking over before they would start. My first guess would be timing though with the backfiring and all.

My first car was a 1990 Dodge Colt (a DSM, of course), and I had the exact same problem you had. It would take me at least 10 min to get it started if it was cold. If I did get it started and I hit the gas, it would die and I'd have to start all over. I took it to 5 or 6 places and replaced every sensor on the car before I took it to this guy who had a shop out in the boonies. I KNEW that he wouldn't have any clue what was wrong with my car and I'd come out a couple hundred dollars lighter and end up with the same problem.

After 3 days, I got my car back and it was running like a champ. They chased down every lead they had and it ended up being the ecu. They replaced it with one from a junkyard, and I never had the problem again. Hope this helps. :thumb:
