ok heres whats going on

I run *warm* at idle

if im on the highway say 70 mph just chilling, it will start to rise till overheat.
so i turn on the heat full blast in defrost, and it usually controlls it. warm, but not dangerous.

all fans work, coolant *looks* fine, no water from water pump, no warning lights, but damn its killing my highway races. Any idea?

I dont think its a HG since i still make great power wit no boost/oil leaks.
how would ignition timing affect it, plus the car doesnt run rough

You might as well change out the thermostat since it is an easy and inexpensive fix. Hopefully that will fix your problem.

Well then, start with the cheap and easy stuff. Replace the T-stat, and rad cap, and get a complete rad flush with new coolent.

Then if it still overheats test the water pump and make sure that is up to par.

And if all else fails it *is* probably a leaking or worn HG, when i had a leaking/blown HG my car still pulled fine, but the temp would raise a little above normal.

yea... im waiting on income tax!!!

ill try the Tstat, and rad cap... since i can jack my buddies cap fromk his car, and the sat from a parts gsx.,.. ill let you know

have you looked to see any leakign lines? Have you flushed your system? Let the car idle till it warms up. Pop the hood, and press the throttle from the inside of the engine bay to see if you have any coolant squirting out.

no leaks, no steam, not hiss, no nothing... BTW when i checked my thermostat this moring... there wassnt one!! i think im gonna try getting it flushed at a shop around here, unless you guys think of something else for me to try

This has happened to me on three different cars including my 1G. it ended up being the damn radiator was clogged. the damn water from my town sucks, I live in TEXAS too!!. now i don't use tap on my cars anymore. I think it was a combination of the tapwater and not replacing the antifreeze for like 3 years plus sometimes!! bet get that radiator checked, almost toasted 3 engines because of it. only cost like $50 to get rodded out and cleaned. worth it even if its not all that bad yet and the thing is like 5 years old or more

Littlebeeper is probably right on the money. I have seen used car dealerships time and time again pull the thermostat out if the car is having issues with overheating. You may have a clogged heater core or radiator. Let us know if flushing everything helped.

I have a similar overheating problem, and I've already flushed once ghetto-stlyie, and once w/ a flushing kit, through the heater hose. I've heard soemthing about getting your heater core "rodded" or something like that....is there anyone else that I could have flush the car that might have more success? Also, if it's my heater core that's clogged, would getting some of that flushing shit and running that through help? I'd like to believe it's anything but a HG, but I've also already bought 2 bottles of antifreeze, and don't want to flush 9 times for nothing :p

Feel free to pm me w/ ideas, too.

Hopefully everyone can find a happy solution to this problem, sure seems like a alot of ppl are having it.

Get a block check done, it's never good news when there is no T'stat and the car is overheating. I would be suspicious that you have a blown head gasket.

Are you having to add coolent to the overflow bottle, if so how much and how often?
Do you know if it's overheating, boiling etc. does the air come out hot from the heater/defroster? Remote is the sending unit is failing, all other gauges working ok?

Cheers,

what you mean by all guages workign well? as in the gage lights or the gages themselves?

No, not the lights but the gauges themselves. There is a voltage regulator to stabalize the varying voltage of the battery and charging system, not to be confused with Alt. regulator. These can fail, get out of adjustment and give erratic readings on all gauges at the same time.

You didn't answer if you are having to add water to the overflow or through the radiator cap??

Ok, I have a similar overheating problem also and maybe you all could help... I thought it was the thermostat on my 1g n/t but that didn't fix it. It doesnt over heat at idle or even at 70 mph but once i start speedin up or it's hot outside my car almost redlines  It's not leaking coolant and i don't have to fill it up constantly, my oil isn't milky (head gasket's ok) and the only other things i can think of is if my fans aren't working or my radiator is clogged. How can you test the fans to make sure they work? and also i was gonna get the radiator flushed to check that, but what about the water pump? is it possible that at slow speeds my water pump works but at higher speeds it's just officially overworked due to age? almost nothing as been replaced on it and it's a 90. The only changes to it are like umpteen clutches and a tranny.

Thanks for the help,
Brett.

P.S. to the other guy, behind your motor is a fitting to hook a hose to your radiator and it has a cap. If the cap is not tight it may cause coolant to leak...

never have to add coolant, heater blows hot. so i dunno

You could try some of the more aggressive cooling system cleaners for steel and aluminum engines. Or you could buy some Oxylic or even much stronger Muratic acid. The latter will be very caustic and you must read and understand how to use it. Alternately you can try a radiator shop and hope that fixes the problem.

Cheers,
GTM
