Well, Im pretty sure my valves are bent. I don't know if they were bent to start with cause I bought the car from some guy who was storing it for some friends who moved away. It had been sitting for 3 years and its come along way. But the belt slipped while I was cranking it and I am not getting any compression.

The thing is now, what do I need to replace, or is even worth replacing anything for just a 91 non-turbo talon (ie just junk the car)

Do you think the by just cranking the car that my pistons could be messed up too?

What kind of cost am I looking at?

TO do it right you will need

Timing belt 69.99
head redone or new head 200-400
belt tensiner 76
water pump 60 or so
tensiner pulley, idler pulley 29 and 31
new head gasket 50

a lot of time or about 200-400 in labor so 516-1116 so you decide

thats all you need to replace to be safe, plus the balance belt another 24 or remove it about 50. I would just part it out, and find a turbo car. I spent about 1200 when all said and done and it still has a few bugs not yet worked out, I did all the work myself, but did tons of research. If your good with cars and you don't mind using used parts you could do it for about 150-200, but never use the same belt no matter what and get it timed right. Even though you just cranked it theres a 98% chance you bent valves. all the parts I listed are good for 60,000 and are very important parts, but for example I've seen good used heads for 100 so there out there

if you need anym more help, let me know

Derek

If its a 1.8 throw a new belt on it and go, if its a 2.0 your likely looking at more work to fix it than its worth but if you can get parts cheap it might be salvagable depending on the extent of the damage.

How much do you think i can get to part out the car. I bought it for $200 cause it was sitting in the field for 3 years. I put about $200 - $350 into it . Do you think that I could make the money back.

Wow, would i really need to replace the head? The car wasn't driving when the belt slipped. It only slipped when i was just cranking the car. Is it possible for just the valves to be bent, or do i need a whole new head. it is a 2.0

Have you retimed it?
Did you hear any horrible noises when it slipped?
How much did it slip?
If you have retimed it have you done a compression test?

You have to take the head off to replace the valves.

not yet, I was wondering if it was going to be worth dumping all the money for new tensioners and stuff, if my whole head is screwed

Well they car isn't running and hasn't run in 3 years, so all I was doing was starting it over and over, and it slipped then, I didn't hear anything, all though I don't think I would be able to over the starter

I believe just a few teeth, but im not sure where it is slipping. I went cheap when I tried timing it and didn't replaced the tenioner. I guess now im paying for it.

I haven't retimed it yet, and the first time a did a compression test it came up with all 0's

The first thing I would do is realign all the timing marks, bypass the hydraulic tensioner if you don't trust it. I would imagine if you just left a pin in it and tightend the tensioner pully a little extra it would be enough to crank it over and do a compression test. If it only slipped a few teeth it is quite possible nothing was damaged and may have proper compression once timed properly. If it has compression once you time it you could consider doing a timing belt, tensioners and pullies. If it has no compression you can make your decision from there and it may be most cost effective to ditch the car and look for something else.
The first time you did a compression test, was that before or after the timing slipped?

I did the compression test after fixing not having fuel and spark (bad ecu) after it slipped, I know I had some compression before, because when i had paper towel in place of the spark plugs (to keep the bolts and dirt out) they flew out when i cranked.

So Ill line them up again and check compression

Well, i lined ever thing up again, it was off. But the timing is perfect and am still not getting compression. Im guessing my valves are bent I want to take a look at them. How hard is it to take the head off?

not hard search head removal. It will take u 5-8 hours at the most, most can do it in 3 hours. and the best in a hour or less

Derek

Should i try and rebuild the head or should I just by a new/rebuilt one of dsmtuners or ebay for $150?
