I've Searched. I think my problem is unique because the noise stops at exactly the same RPM every time, but never ultimately goes away - and I couldn't get an answer when posting to someone else's similar thread.

My ticking: never goes away except

- when exceeding roughly 2500 rpms

- somewhat when you put a full load on the engine (steering all the way right, etc,.)

-when you turn the radio up very load... j/k

I don't know whether to look at lifters or timing belt job first.

ANY IDEAS??

If lifter tick - has anyone tried the transmission fluid trick where you add it and then change oil right away?

This is for a 90 GST that I bought and want to sell once I eliminate this problem.

BTW, I tried a half bottle of ATF, drove it around a little, and noticed no difference. I am really starting to doubt lifters.

What do you think?

I think it's time to stop voodoo-mightbe cures and spend a few hundred on a mechanic before you wind up thousands behind. There's only so much we can guess at over the web.

Don't drive it any more until diagnosed and repaired.

yeah, I am going to forget the 'lifter tick' notion because it just doesn't sound like the problem. All (5) of my Talons have had lifter tick, and its never this constant or flat-sounding. It needs a timing belt job anyway, and I want to do a complete timing belt job - so I can be well versed in it. This way I will know what I am doing when I do it on my GOOD Talon. ;)

What do you think about the eBay Timing belt kits?

They seem complete, and they're only $100 - $150.

It's your timing belt tensioner.

Also a cure for lifter tick is a kerosene flush. I just did it on my last oil change. Ran 3 quarts of kerosene and 1.5 quarts of oil. I've ran straight kerosene before also. It flushes the HLA's out like nothing else. I know people are gonna flame me and disagree, but little do they know, dealerships use this method.

i agree with the timing belt tensioner......the kerosene thing is not a good idea, just for the fact that kerosene will not be able to lubricate under extreme pressure that the rod and main bearings are under, also not a good idea for the oil pump, since it won't prevent scuffing........... :dsm:

Well, its totally a matter of choice on the flush. The 1.5 quarts of oil thickens it up and lubricates everything IMO. Makes those cold startups much more feasible.

OK. I'm gonna go find a Timing Belt kit. I'm going to get everything except I'm not going to hunt for a "super strong" timing belt - because I don't think a stronger belt has ever saved a 4g63.

EBAY kits? Anyone?

im a certified honda technician. My voodoo mightbe cure works and i use it at the dealership along side my supervisor. I filler up with trans fluid run for 5 mins then drain fillerup with motor oil and run for 15min then drain and change filter and filler up once more for good. It cleared up my lifter tap on my 90 gsx

That's okay. No need to apologize.

That's fine. Both you and your boss are there to listen and diagnose the noise. I can't hear squat over this broadband, and with the amount of rod and balances shaft bearing failures we see on here, and the apparent small amount of experience GoldÐiamond seems to have with automotive repair, I think he'd do well to spend some money with a shop. And I'd definitely recommend that he not try to do a flush himself.

NO not little experience with DSM and/or maintenance of them.
YES little experience with flushing using ATF or Kerosene.

I will just do the TB kit because it needs it anyway, and it really doesn't sound to be lifters anymore anyway.

Thanks for advice.
