Is this normal. I was driving in 10 inches of snow. It seemed to do fine in it. However when i played the video back my friend recorded i noticed something. It seems that the rear wheels would really spin when it was deep but the front wouldnt. They seemed to move a little but not sure. It grips when i get back out on the road again though. I was told in these cars that its possible that if it needs to it can transfer 100 percent of power to only one axle but when you return to a grip surface that it returns to normal. Someone please help me im afraid my all wheel drive is screwed. also in less deeper snow i do notice the front wheels spinning on video what is goin on here

A friend of mine owns an SRT-4, and when he does e-brake burnouts only one wheel spins. That's just the way differentials work.

you think everythings fine its just the fact i was in very deep snow that made the rear spin and front not really move? it seems to work perfect when not in crap like that you can deff feel the awd but you think its just because the back had more traction that the front didnt spin until i got on a grippy surface

The transfer case is basically a differential, it lets one side of it spin faster than the other when needed. I wouldn't worry about it. If I remember right, that's one of the big differences between 4WD and AWD. 4WD uses a chain or belt in the transfer case to power the front wheels (think pickup truck). AWD uses viscous coupling to let the front and back spin at different rates depending on where power is needed.

The transfer case does nothing more than redirect the power twards the rear of the car instead of twards the drivers side fender. The center differential and VC control front/rear power split. Stock our cars are more "3 wheel drive" (assuming LSD rear, 2wd if non LSD rear) than all wheel drive. I have done burnouts with 3 awd dsm's all of them left one short mark on the drivers front tire, 2 meduim equal length marks from the rears and one long one on the passenger front.

When you start spinning on any wheels the VC will lock because of the difference in speed between the front and rear drivelines and "basically" send equal power to the front and rear differentials via the center differental to try and control the spin. Then since most awd dsm's have an LSD rear the rear diff will also "lock" when it senses spin on the rear wheels and send equal power to each of the rear wheels.

But the front differential is an open diff so it may only spin one wheel since there is no LSD the power will take the path of least resistance, and since the drivers side axle is a bit heavier with the intermediate shaft(more weight to turn), has slightly more resistance to turning because of the carrier bearing and most of all more weight over it from the engine it will ussually spin the passenger tire rather than the drivers side tire since its easier to turn.

I wouldn't worry about it, it sounds normal to me :shhh:

I was pulling my brother's '97 GSX out if the two feet of snow that was plowed over it and he told me every once in a while only the front would spin or only rear. I'm not worried though.

Would this be an SRT-4 with or without posi?

Some posi units can be "over powered" and push all power to the wheel with no traction. That is probably what is happening if he has posi.

Dunno. I never asked him. I just noticed when he does burnouts usually only one wheel spins.
