I recently rebuilt my motor and I started it and let it run, no problems, on my first drive i came back (only around the block) and parked it. Oil was paracticaly pouring out from under it. I open the hood and oil is everywhere, there is a leak somewhere behind the timing cover, so I take it off and since the oil is leaking onto my timing belt it's getting thrown everywhere and I can't tell where it is leaking from. It only leaks once the engine is hot. So I'm pretty sure it's at a steel/aluminium mating surface. So I replaced the front case gasket, oil filter/cooler gasket, and oilpan gasket. Still leaking. Could it be possible that my hadgasket is leaking. I have a stock gasket and a BR stage 3 O-ringed head. Are the O-rings keeping my headgasket from sealing the oil passeges?? I'm out of ideas. I'm about ready to pull the whole motor down and replace every gasket and seal in the thing, and I haven't even got a chance to drive it more than 2 miles on my new motor :(

If the oil pours out bad like you are saying, from my experiences it is either the oil pump going bad or your rear main seal. You should be able to tell where it is coming from. Wipe down all the oil as best as you can. Jack the car up and turn it on and see where it is leaking from. Those two things are the main things that go bad that causes major leakage. Oil pump is a typical thing that people do not change in a motor rebuild and that tends to a shitty thing on DSM's.

My timing slipped because the belt got soaked with oil mainly from the valve cover gasket leaking. Have you checked that? Dont know if that helps much.

Your valve cover must have been leaking for a long time for that to happen. Unless there was a huge crack in it a bad gasket would leak a lot of oil over a time period. It shouldn't pour out like this guy was saying.

Hmm, oops your right. Must be getting tired. I didnt see that he said it was pouring out. Ya mine was leaking for a while, but i didnt really know about it because the timing cover covered it up.

when I pulled the timing cover off the area around the rear main seal and oil pump was pretty dry. It seemed to be coming from somewhere closer to the top. The only thing that I could possibly think of is the headgasket, or the front case. Every seal and gasket on the thing is brand new, everything is torqued to the specs in my chiltons manual. I can't stand to see my car sitting, covered in snow! :(

Like I said you need to wipe the oil down and get it cleaned up and jack that car up and let it run and see where it is coming from. That is really all you can do. The front case is what people call the oil pump also, so I don't know what you mean by the front case. It's possible that it is the headgasket, but it should be pretty obvious if it was that. You bought new head bolts right? Stock headbolts cannot be reused. Once you torque them down they are no good. If you decide to take your head off again get some ARP's. Those are reuseable and torque them down a little more than the Chilton manual says. I also recommend using the Mitsu 4 layer headgasket.

you shouldnt have and oil pan gasket all you are suppose to use is RTV sealent, you might want to check your camshaft seals also.

Well, the gasket kit I bought had a gasket for the oilpan and I used it. It works fine. The thing that I can't figure out is why it would only leak once it's good and hot, which leads me away from thinking it's the camshaft, main, or balance shaft/oilpump seals. I'm really trying to find out if anyone has ever had problems with a headgasket leaking like that, I'm pretty sure that's where it's from, but I just want to be SURE before I do that big of a job.

when i rebuilt my motor my cam seals were fubar'ed for some reason. all inside the front cover, over the timing belt and everywhere else you can imagine. that same day my oil return line cracked straight down the middle. needless to say 100 dollar towing bill and one pissed off dude later it was back at my house. i got new seals and oil return line and its been go to me ever since.
