The lowdown:

1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. 164,000 miles on the body, 30-45k miles on the JDM motor, which is from a 91+ model.

I've had the car running several times, but she's down again and has been for several months.

The problem is that the moment the motor starts it dies again, no matter how many times I try. I've narrowed it down to a fuel delivery problem.

According to my book, the fuel pump is supposed to whirr to live when the key is turned to the 'on' position. I've listened and the fuel pump won't whirr. I've checked the connections and their fine. Using a method descibed in the book to bypass the fuel relay box (next to the ECM inside the console) I got the fuel pump to whirr to life as described it should in the book, so I know the pump is working.

The book says that without proper ignition pulses fuel delivery will be disrupted, and I'm thinking that's what's happening here. So I think the fault might lie in the Crank/Camshaft sensor or the ECM.

I'm going to be checking both soon but would like any more advice on the matter. What else could it be? What else should I look for?

Many, many thanks!

Yes that could be it. Did you also test to see if you have adequate fuel pressure at the rail(due to bad pump, clogged fuel filter, leaky FP regulator)?

All I've done at the rail is I pulled off the fuel-feed line then turned over the motor. Gas came out, so I knew the pump was working at least somewhat, but it seemed to leak out, not pour out.

My book doesn't say what my fuel pressure should be at, so I don't know what to test it for.

Do you think this problem could boil down to something as simple as a fuel filter?

Could be. Try bypassing the filter to see what happens. On my 99GST fuel pressure is spec'd at 33 psi with vacuum hose on fuel pressure regulator connected and 42-45 with it closed off. That's quite a bit more than leaking out.
