had my friend change my oil about 4 days ago, and while boosting today i hit fuel cut @ 5000 rpm. i looked in my rear view and saw a cloud of smoke behind me. i pulled into a gas station, and it turned out the oil filter came loose, and dumped oil all over the engine bay, wheel wells, and body of the car.

we put on a new filter, new oil, and the car started right up. i started driving, and noticed a loud howling/whining that was consistent with the amount of vac/boost. i drove about 8 blocks like this, and i tried boosting it. i have my mbc set @ 15, but it only went to about 6. i tried boosting again, and it wouldn't go past 0, couldn't even hear the turbo start to spool. there was nothing but the howling/whining. it sounds like a damn gear drive on a v8.

i noticed there was a little oil around the oil inlet on top of the turbo, but i can't get a socket in there to check if it's loose. it's a big 16g by the way. any help is appreciated. i am super bummed out right now. i might as well be driving an awd civic right now...

does it smoke white out the back?, maybe you seized something from the loss of oil, could be your turbo seals, happened to a friend of mine, turbo seals was the case, thats if your seeing oil coming out the top of the turbo

Well, he did say he put a new filter on and put new oil in. I'm sure he has some idea because coincidentally those bottles are DAMN CLOSE to a quart! Amazing!

And fill out your vehicle profile. Otherwise I am forced to assume what you drive.

since it was nighttime when it happened, i couldn't tell for sure what color the smoke was. the car drives fine other than the lack of boost and whining noise. it doesn't smoke anymore (except the oil burning off inside the engine bay). my friend thinks maybe the bearing inside the turbo has a bunch of junk on it, and we should try to clean it out. i just hope i didn't fry my turbo. i can't afford another one right now.

the gas station i pulled into was about a quarter mile after it happened. as soon as i saw the smoke, i turned the car off and coasted as far as i could, but had to start it again for a few seconds to get into the driveway.

i checked the dipstick at the gas station and it was bone dry. once i pulled off the filter, only about another half a quart came out. when i put the new filter on and filled it with oil, it took almost 4.5 quarts to fill it, i.e. it was completely out of oil.

the car is a 91 tsi awd. the motor only has like 14,000 miles on it. i am going to check tomorrow morning for shaft play.

my friend thinks the bearing inside the turbo might have some junk on it, and it might be keeping it from spooling. right now it doesn't spool at all. none whatsoever. am i out of line asking him to buy me a new turbo since he didn't put the filter on all the way? he's my friend and all, but if i had the oil done at a shop and this happened, wouldn't the shop be liable?

i took the intake off, and there was a little oil coming out by the shaft. there is a little shaft play, but no more than before this happened. the inlet lines are tight, but there seems to be some oil coming out of the top inlet. this is the last thing i needed right now. :thumbdown :barf:

if you still have a stock side mount pull off the licp and see how much if any oil comes out, I had about a quart of oil when my t-25 went out, plus the smoke, plus the howling, plus the zero boost.

just filled out vehicle profile. it wouldn't let me do it the last 3 times i tried for some reason.

and i didn't blow my motor, just the turbo. the motor still runs fine.
