Is there any other way to test the TPS, other than the ohmeter test, because right now, i have it set to the 5 ohms, and .9 ohms, but i still have idle surge, and i know the TPS is my problem, i've tried, tested, changed, everything else, LOL.

Do i need to take the TB off in order to get to the TPS, my car is under a bit of snow right now, so i really don't want to go and look, sorry. Can i swap TPS's without taking the TB off, thats my question?

No need to take TB off, but it's quite difficult to get to bottom screw of the tps, small place.
Quicker to take tb off :)

My local dsm mechanic, says that the TPS will not cause idle surge, i will NOT, "he emphasized that", is he true, because the only remaining things left, are the FIAV, and the ECU, and you can't run a pressure test in a non-turbo, which sucks.

Hey man do this. You can block-off your ISC, FIAV, and your EGR one at a time if you want. Block one off, and so on. Hopefully after you block one off, your surge will go away, and you'll have found your culprit. But also, swapping in a friends known good one is just as easy of a way to check too.

And about the TPS, I'm pretty sure the VFAQ says that it's possible that it can cause it. But I've never seen it cause it in person. I think it's pretty rare.

i know how to block off the FIAV, but i don't want to permanitly block it off, since i live in wisconsin. I know how to block the EGR off. But how do i block the ISC off, i've never seen a vfaq on that one. I am pretty sure it is not the ECU, because when i bought the car, it did idle surge, but only for the first 30 seconds after you started it. Then one moring, it just never stopped idle surging. It looks like the FIAV, but i don't want to permanitly block it off, because if it isn't the problem, i want to be able to return it to stock.

Edit: When you remove the EGR valve, is there supposed to be a gasket there, because when i removed mine, there wasn't. Could that be my leak right there? I did put a lot of RTV on it, so i kinda made my own gasket though.

Your Mechanic is correct, the TPS won't cause idle surge. If he said you can't do a pressure test on a NA he's wrong, you just have less to check. Make something to attach to the TB.

Well, he only works on turbo dsm's, so i don't blame him on a non-turbo question. I was thinking, of duct taping one end of the intake hose, then putting the air compressor hose in the valve cover breather hose, seal it, then apply light pressure(i have an adjustable compressor). Would that work, then i could test the intake hose for leaks too. What PSI should i use, and what do i need to do when doing the test, as in moving hoses, opening up butterfly(throtttle), removing anything sensitive.... Thanks for the quick repsonse, i'm trying to get my stuff ready for wednesday, my big "work on my car" day.

Find a PVC cap that will fit inside the intake hose or coupler and clamp the hose over it like you do to the MAF. Since your intake will never see more than full engine vaccum there won't be more than a 10 psi or so difference relative to ATM. If it doesn't leak with 10 psi trying to get out it shouldn't leak with 10 psi trying to get in.

I don't think anything else would be at risk but I'm not much of a NA DSM guy either. Opening the butterfly wouldn't hurt but enough air should flow through the BISS and other bypasses to reach and pressurize the intake.

Use soapy water to help locate the leaks, just like when looking for leaks in tires.

If you don't know how to block those off, then just try swapping in a known good one from a friend. To block off the ISC, well just read the vfaq on how to block off FIAV, and don't cut out the hole that it tells you to cut out for the ISC. Then its blocked. You don't have to make it permanent, you can take the blockoff plate out. But it would be much easier to just swap in known good ones.

See, there a few non-turbos around here, there is a lot of turbos though. So finding a good TB will not be easy. I don't really trust a junkyard engine, since it has been sitting for who knows how long. Today i'm going to get an insurance quote for a 92 tsi, hopefully i can get that, then i can sell this car, and be done with idle surge, LOL.....for now.

hey proracer..... is the guy your talking about Frank? the dsm freak in point?.... He seems to know his stuff, I've bought a few parts from him in the past.... every once in a while I got a good deal..... but Ive learned to buy NEW Items after so many issues with used shit.... Hopefully Ill get my new coated valves, revised lifters, and Mitsu metal headgasket tomarro so my beast will have new life...
