so I was helping a friend work on his car, and we were setting the base timing..
The car doesn't have a fan on it, so we were trying to hurry so it wouldn't overheat.
The temp got up about 3/4 on the gauge (no where near the red), and I watched as the timing belt started to get darker and looking like it was covered in something slick.
I thought it was oil at first, so I had him cut the car off. When the car was off, whatever was on the Tbelt was steaming, and wasn't very oily. I got a rag and wiped a section of the belt off, and it progressively dried up. We went to get a drink, and when we got back outside, the Tbelt was dry.
I inspected the lower Tbelt cover, and I saw traces of coolant that had ran down to the bottom of the cover, and dripped out onto where the oil pan meets the block.

So my question is where did the coolant come from, and why did it spray on the timing belt? the only places that it could do so are from the water pump seal, and the headgasket seal. I figured it maybe got a little hot and the headgasket leaked (it's a metal gasket) a little bit, but I dunno.

The car hasn't done this since, and it runs great. What do you think?

Just be careful with that t-belt, because when you get oil on it it stretches it and can cause it to jump a few teeth, not sure if coolant would do that, just a heads up, how many miles has it been since the t-belt was changed, if you replace the water pump, do all the t-belt parts, and of course the belt, it's a small amount to pay to protect against a bigger problem down the road.
