Greetings,

I recently just purchased a 1999 Eclipse GZ OZ rally edition, :thumb:

Its a sundance pearl plum color.. (Purple) well when i got the car i was way over excited in canada ontario we dont have many eclipses around so i jumped on the occasion and after i bought it, i got it fine detailed by a body shop i trust,

well anyways.. i went to get the car safety, i did not drive 1 km on this car. and anyway the engine is totally cooked, :(

like when it idles its fine, but when i pull the throttle and it reaches 3000 rpm a loud knocking, like a clicking on metal happes inside the engine and once when i popped the hood smoke came out? :(

I was wondering what are my options?
i took it to a mechanic but he didnt even know what type of car it is.. :|
so, im deciding, the car is a 2 hour drive away from me right now, im thinking if i should swap for a used engine or rebuilt it or if anyother GS owners can help me out and tell me how the hell to fix my problem!

I know, i know, vague problems = vague answer but i feel like my heart is about to drop over my beauty... :dsm:

okay.. i did some research on the forum, a rod knock?
maybe.. its like a ticking sound, gets harded when the higher rev's

all the car has to it, is performance cams supposidly.. and it came from indiana, previous owner even punked the k and n filter.. garg

Rod nock sounds more like a hard thumping noise. It is very loud. If your car is idleing fine and sounds smooth at idle I really don't think that you have a low end motor noise. You can head a rod knock at all RPMs.

You can check for a spun bearing by unplugging one cylinder and starting the car, seeing if you reproduce the sound. DO NOT plug and unplug the spark plugs while the car is running! You'll get knocked on your patootey. Just repeat that procedure for all 4 cylinders. If you still hear it, it's not rod knock. If you do still hear it, my advice would be to drain the oil, pull the oil pan, and check for metal - a balance shaft bearing may be on the way out.

But like the other guy said, rod knock sounds like a "tapping", not a ticking. It's usually a rather prominent "man, something is seriously wrong here" sound, you can lose power, etc, etc. But I disagree about hearing it at all RPMs - I've seen plenty of cases of spun rod bearings where you could not hear it at idle.

rev the car while standing in the engine bay. Listen to see if the sound is coming from the head. It could be as simple as a rocker falling off.

good luck

Okay guys, thanks for the replies,

I will be bringing the car home wednesday on a uhaul type car rental wagon thing...

And, the sound does sound like a knocking, when the car was being safety tested, i asked the mechanic to take a stethoscope to it which he had and the noise was coming from the bottom,

THANKS alot for the info about using the spark plugs, that is a brilliant idea to diagnoise my problem properly! i will keep you updated, if anything if does come down to an engine swap do i have any other alternatives for engines?

thanks
