Hey , just got my engine back together, using the 4 layer head gasket, started it up, and everything was fine, then started it up the next day, and i got white smoke, the head gasket didnt seal, so i loosen it up, re-torque it, and restart the engine today, it done fine , so i shut it off, and when i start it back , same thing white smoke, gasket leaking.
Is there any of you all that have dealt with the 4 layer head gasket, is there a trick to getting it to seal , thks !!

Did you have the head and block resurfaced when you did it? The metal gaskets are more picky about their mounting surgaces. Are you using ARP studs they use higher torque specs. I've heard a few people reccommend copper gasket spray but I haven't tried it myself.

yea i HAD a metal HG... i had the head and block surfaced... they are very picky about that... you could check your block and head for flatness with a straight edge and use a feeler gauge.... i ended up just going with an OEM the last time i had the head off... i guess you could try some copper seal spray on the HG to see if that helps... but if its not flat, esp in btw the center two cyls, then ild try an OEM gasket.... many ppl have had similar problems, they switch back to OEM and have no problems... dontreally need a metal one unless your boost 25+

Just really scared of oem gasket, i really built this motor 9:1 compression, hks 272,272
titanium valves and springs, big rods, head ported too much :), do you think a oem gasket will hold up under 30lbs of boost?

MLS will seal if:

* block is straight with a smooth finish.
* head is straight and also has a smooth finish.
* ARP are torqued using proper technique and proper lube.
* HG is sprayed with hylomar to seal water jackets.

Thats your problem. You need to get some copper gasket spray and spray it all over the gasket on both sides. That's what I did, and it sealed fine.

Ok, got new head gasket installed, went with oem, all is good! The multi layer gasket somehow split around the cylinder, i will post a pic of it for everyone to see, thks for everyones help!

If your head and deck are true you do not need any kind of sealant, you will only need a sealant if otherwise.
