OK, Just recently I had to replace my alternator and after two weeks the adjustment bolt loosened and the belt started to squeal. Is there any trick to keeping this bolt from backing out?

Try loctite threadlocker...the blue kind....it will still be removeable but should keep it from backing out. The Red or Green varieties will probably keep it from backing out a little too much (ie it would be a pita to remove so stick with the blue).

Defiant, Im sure the bolt backed out because the Alt was not in the same position it is in in the picture above. The pic above is of the Alt fully tightened and the belt tensioned. Last night when the belt started squealing and I pulled over to investigate, and the Alt was back about 1/4, and I could wiggle the tensioning bolt by hand. I am going to combine your suggestion of tighting the mounting bolts a little more with adding some lock-tite to the threads of the tensioning bolt. I'll see what happens in a few days of driving.

Thanks to all for the input so far.

this has happened to me a while ago. immediately after turning on my car, my belts would squeal. it was annoying so i also investigated. first thing i did was tighten the alternator's belt as much as i could. that actually fixed the problem itself.

I retightened that same belt, as belts seem to "stretch" over time, due to the use and the use of materials used to make the belt.

i would retighten the mounting bolt, retighten the "tensioner" bolt and throw a lock washer on the "tensioner" bolt as well....... that "blue" lock-tite idea also would benefit your cause in the issue of the bolt "backing out"

that exact thing happened to me too. i solved it by buying a new bolt and it never happened again. i had to b/c my bolt was bent when my car was crashed into.
