I need some help guys, my car stalled last night when I tried to take off from a stop light.
When I started it again, there was a very weak idle and a loud clicking noise. After I limped the car into a near by parking lot, there was a burning smell from the engine bay. The smell was not very strong, and nothing was on fire.

This morning I went out to look at the car. I started it and heard the same clicking noise comming from the belt side of the motor and after it was running for a few seconds the smell came back. The car starts right away and seems to hold idle, just sounds like its about to blow up.

A little background:
The car was making a loud squealing noise on start up for the last three weeks. The noise had been there for a while, but only got worse recently.

Thanks for all the help,
Greg

Is the sound a definate clicking noise or could you put it in the category of a flapping noise like someone smacking something with a belt?

I had my balance shaft belt snap on me and flap around in the T-belt housing before it fell off. Iknew at the time it was the B-Belt and I was lucky it fell off and into the housing without affecting my T-Belt before I had a chance to shut the car down.

It could be that it was workign its way loose (hence the smell), then finally snapped and is now flapping around in the housing (hence the noise and the smell).

It will definately sound more like rubber hitting metal then a ticking and it WILL increase as rpm's increase but I don't recomend starting that car if thats what it is becuase if it interferes with your T belt you will have one busted motor :)

Take the T-belt covers off and see if you can get a look under there. You MIGHT be able to see something.

Update:

I got under the car today. I found a crack in the lower timing belt cover. the plastic cover was moved out enough so that it was rubbing on the belt that goes between the crank shaft pulley and the air conditioning pulley. So, I imagine that explains the burning smell.

Now, what could cause that crack from behind the cover? Im not exactly a newb here, but I have also never done a timing belt change or even gone back there.

I am thinking I need to take all the pulleys/covers off and inspect that side of the motor changing the timing belt in the process. It had already been changed at 60,000 now im at 90,000.

I give up, its going in the shop. Thanks anyways guys. Im going to get a rental so I'll be able to take care of my errands and stuff.
