cracnkshaft moving!!!

ok guys im really hoping that this can be fixed. about a month ago i started getting this noise that sounded like a pulley or something rubbing, so today i take it to a friends and pop the hood and get it making that noise and we notice that the flipping crankshaft is moving side to side about a 1/4 inch and thats the only time it makes the noise. now i changed my ps belt, alt belt, and timing belt about 3 months ago and this problem started happening about a month and a half ago. usually i get the noise on cold starts and at low low rpms like around 400. also im getting a real loud belt squeak on cold starts which started about 2 weeks after changing them. i think one of them just needs tightened to fix that but with the crankshaft moving slightly, does this mean the c word because if so im gonna cry. any suggestions? thanks

If its actually your crank shaft thats moving thats probably pretty bad news now matter how you slice it. 1/4" seems a bit crazy.
Are you certain its the crankshaft and not just the pulley thats worn out and comming apart?

It's your harmonic balancer.

A crank might be able to move, in the very worst-case scenario, 1/8".

hey everyone im havin a similar mystery noise......just a quick qustion what did the rubbing sound like? was it loud and increase with rpm increase? thanx alot

no usually it was just on cold starts for me and when i was at lower rpms. seemed to go away at higher.

I had this happen to me not too long ago. Sounds almost like a metal grinding/rubbing... really weird noise. Apparently my balancer was separated into two pieces, the center rubber section and the actual pulley portion. Crank was spinning and the belts werent moving; thank god it didnt walk on me

got ya thanx a lot....my sounds EXACTLY like that but my problem is u can hear it with only the tbelt on and all accesory belts and pullys off....i think it mite be the idler and/or tensioner pulley......its got me stumped...lemme kno if u find the problem...thanx

Well what originally happened to my car to make everything screw up was that my AC compressor seized and shot the belt off. The compressor itself was making the most god aweful sound in the entire world before i got it fixed. So check that as well if you bring it somewhere to get looked at.
