Well I've had this problem and my car has been parked for awhile now since I refuse to drive it with this sound.
I can start the car and rev it right away just find with no unusual noise. After it heats up though at idle I hear a clicking noise that seems to be comming from mid to lower end by the timing belt area. First sugestion was rubbing on the Timing belt cover. Well I had that..the cover was really loose all over and had several holes/circles cut in it from pullies.
I got the cover off started it up...let it warm up the sound comes back..clicking noise at idle that turns into a VERY LOUD GROWL as you rev it up and it seems to fade as you rev higher than say 3.5-4k. Read up on some things. Sliced my balance shaft belt..not really extra vibration...and the sound didn't go away either.
Any ideas? water pump? I only have the Alt belt on..no TB cover to rub on?
I'd really appreciate any input. I can't think of what else would be likley to cause this hideous noise.
