Bogging down at higher rpms and ticking gets faster too

My Brother's 97 GST has a weird problem...the car bogs down in higher rpms (He describes it as downshifting..the car doesnt want to go with the pedal floored), also he has a ticking noise that gets faster as the rpms get higher (I think its a valve tap maybe not). IF ANYONE HAS EVER COME ACROSS A SIMILAR PROBLEM AND HAS FIXED IT PLEASE LET ME KNOW. MY BROTHER BOUGHT THE CAR FOR 10000 BACK IN OCT AND IT HAD AROUND 90000 MILES ON IT. :cry: :cry: :dsm:

I think the ticking and bogging are 2 different problems. The bogging sounds like catalytic convertor is plugging up. I had a ticking sound that drove me crazy for a while. I finally discovered in was the idler bearing on timing belt. A good muffler shop should be able to help you with possible convertor problem, they will drill hole in exhaust just before convertor and measure back pressure. If I remember right anything over 3 ponds pressure is bad. But look at the bright side...nows your chance to put a full performance sytem on car!!!

A ticking noise that increases in frequency as the rpms increase typically means you have lifter tick, which is a common problem of DSMs. If it's lifter tick, you'll just need to spend $150 and buy 3rd gen Eclipse lifters, which are better than their 2nd gen counterparts. Honestly, I don't know how to tell if that's what the problem is, but someone else will know.
