Hello,

If anyone can offer some advice/comments regarding the following please do.

I have read that on the 1990's the shifter cables were both adjustable from inside the car by the shifter assembly, is this infact true? Because the Mitsubishi dealership insisted they gave me the correct cables, I even had them give me two different cables and none of them have the double adjustments on them. So I decided to measure from the mounting/bracket points from the stock cables that were originally on the car(the double adjustable ones) and the two sets mitsubishi gave me.

One set of the Mitsubishi cables was upto spec atleast it appears that way. I then put them on and now it grinds mostly going into 3rd and sometimes into 4th (I can get around it grinding at all if i very gently put it into 3rd or 4th. I still get a little click sound when I get into them when it doesn't grind. I have tried adjusting by the chilton, by what people have said online, also with trial and error. Still does it for some reason. By the way I am running syncromesh in there.

SUMMARY:

1990 Talon Tsi Awd 5-speed, syncromesh.
Won't shift into 3rd(grinds alittle/clicks) or 4th(clicks) unless I gently put her in. (Shifter asembly loose? or something worn/loose?)
1990's must have the double adjustable cables? Dealership still sell those?
syncro's going? anyway to test specifically?

P.s. - Sorry for making 2 threads about it just trying to get some feedback, mods can delete one or whatever works. :thumb:

I have a 90 & a 91 - Start at the Tranny - put both levers in Nuetral/center detente' position - Then check the Shift Cable Support Bracket & make sure it has no loose Fasteners - Go inside the Console - & adjust Cable ends to Nuetral Position - check the VFAQ for Pix - If you still shift like crap change your Slave Cylinder - stiill bad? - then change the Clutch Master Cylinder. You can put LIQUID GOLD in the Tranny but if Slave Cylinder or Master Cylinder are bad it will grind & tear your Synchros all to hell.

Thanks, on that 90 of yours are the shifter cables both adjustable from inside the car by the shifter assembly?

Well it stumped me, i put back in the slightly messed up cables which were in there originally( adjustable on both cables) and adjusted multiple times and tried everything with those cables and now it's still no better... It will still grind 3rd/4th unless I ease her gently into those gears. Syncro's ? If it is the syncro's shouldn't I beable to double-clutch it into those gears?(I can't btw still will grind unless I ease it in which still might get a grind or click out of it) What do you think?

I replaced those within the last week, it still seems to be having a problem with 3rd and a slight problem with 4th unless I ease it into them. Thanks for the help I appreciate it man.

I still say you start at Tranny - eliminate any lost motion then go to Shifter but - you have been in the Shifter part of the VFAQ of course...

Adjusting the shifter takes care of one of 2 problems:

You can't get it into 1st/2nd or 5th/R - this is because the side-to-side adjustment is off
The tranny grinds going into 1/3/5 or 2/4/R - this is because the front-to-back adjustment is off

Ya, I am starting to lean towards the tranny being messed up. Here's a list of what I have tried to get it to shift correctly which it does except in 3rd and 4th(mind you I can get it into them if I gently and with all concentration ease it into them):

1) Adjusting original shifter cables
2) Tried different new shifter cables and adjusted those
3) Drained/Replaced tranny fluid with penzoil syncromesh
4) Replaced master cylinder/slave cylinder
5) Welded clutch pedal assembly
6) Longer slave rod
7) Shimmed the clutch fork
8) Tried adjusting cables via instructions on vfaq/other dsmtuners articles
9) Tried adjusting cables via Hanyes and Chilton manuals
10) Tried adjusting cables via common sense/trial and error
