I set the timing with the ecu grounded and put it at 5 on the timing belt cover.I unhook the ground wire for the ecu and it shoots back up and stays at about 15.I cleared the ecu and went for a drive and everything.Still high after ungrounding.Should i just set base timing without the ground? Will this hurt anything? Is my ecu at fault ,since its changing the timing after i unplug the ground?

The ECU does change the timing as soon as you unground the check connector but 15 degrees seems high. I don't have a '95 service manual in my set but on my 1G it bounces about 8 to 10 at idle with the check connector disconnected.

Hell, I should have just looked at the later 2g manuals I have.
Even though it's not adjustable they do have a spec. Of course the base is 5 BTDC +-3, and normal at idle should be about 8 BTDC plus they go on to state that is +- 7 degrees with an additional adjustment of 5 to 8 degrees advance at higher altitudes.

So 15 might not be bad at all.

Well i should just leave it? When i ungrounded it,the white marks were completely out of the "BTDC l l l5 l l T " on the timing belt cover. It was like an inch past it."about 15-20 degrees it would seem" I dont know if i should just set timing "without" it grounded or what. I am at sea level also. I guess this makes a difference. So you guys think im okay? When the ecu takes control it seems timing is TOO far advanced. I should only be seeing a slight fluctuation when i unground the ecu right? Should i have unground the ecu with the car running or with the key out? Any difference. Thanks ,Travis

the timing is supposed to be set at 750 rpms (where it idles from factory). the timing raises the higher the rpms go. thats why when your cruising about 2,500 rpms the timing will be in the 30* range.
