Thunder Bay,
Ok, today I went to take my car for a safety inspection, and one thing they found wrong on the car was "both rear hoses broken". I wasn't really sure what they were talkign about. The mechanic pointed to these two small rubber hoses close to the bumper, on both the right and left sides. The hoses stuck out maybe about 3 or 4 inches, and I could slide them up and down. I took these pics of one of the hoses, maybe someone can help me out in determining what these hoses are for? Excuse the poor quality... I picked up this digital camera for $15.

Thanks in advance.

Those are the two hoses that relocate rain from the hatch wells to the ground. Open your hatch, and to the left and right are two holes. That's what those hoses are connected to.

Go to that mechanic with a cup of water, tell him to look underneath the car, and pour it into both of those holes.

That is a drain hose for the hatch. Water will get into the seams between the car and the hatch and needs to drain out, using those hoses that connect up into that seam area. If you want to check and make sure, get some water and poor it into that seam area. Then check to see if the water drains out of those hoses. I don't believe that should cause you to fail any inspections seeing as how it's only water

Thanks alot for the quick replies... I'm a little pissed off at that mechanic, what an idiot. I'm gonna bring it back to him right now!

If you have a sun roof, you will actually have 2 sets of 'broken hoses' back there :p One will be for the hatch drain (as the posts above state), and the other will be for the rear drain on the sunroof (there's also one in the front for the sun roof on either side).

It's generally a good idea to make sure these stay clean and clog-free. Every now and then I test mine with a cup of water. Dirt and little bugs, etc . . . like to clog these tubes up.

As for the mechanic . . .

off topic but, where did you get a digi camera for 15$? i want one :p

Haha, Wal-Mart my friend. The camera is a Vivitar ViviCam 3350. It cost me $25 Canadian, so I just estimated that being $15 US. That's actually more like $18 US, but close enough. For that low of a price, I'm happy with the camera. It comes with software and a usb cable, and you can use it as a webcam.

And yeah, it's not an art camera, but it sure did making what you were talking about plenty clear enough. I keep an outdated digi in the car in case there's a crash or something. You just can't beat a picture.

I would take it back to the mechanic. Tell him to crawl under the car and look in the hose real close and when hes looking in it, pour some water in the hole so he gets water in his face and say "its a ####ing drain hose for the hatch you asshole, some mechanic you are."

BTW
How many pics does that camera hold

that guys gets the "DUMB A$$ OF THE YEAR AWARD" must of got his schooling out of a cracker jack box... Thats them shops just trying to make an extra buck, i do what Defiant said. Should have one on the left and two on the right, one for the hatch and the other is the spill over for the gastank, i think its the shorter of the two. :thumb:

Haha I like your idea, Nautica985. I'll be going back to that mechanic sometime this week probably. I think I am honestly going to write a formal complaint to... well whoever deals with that kind of stuff. But I'm really considerign pouring water all over his face hahaha.

By the way, the camera holds 26 shots in "high-quality" mode, or 80 shots in the low quality mode, which my two pictures were taken in.

Wow man a mechanic couldent even see that it was a drain.... i have to admit i had the same reaction when i found them hoses too but shit man im not that stupid. I found out that shit just by washin the car once  Stupid wrench heads think its a problem or they just tryin to jip you outta your scril flow (a.k.a cash flow ) sorry for slang but im ghetto :p

hey now, Havent you ever made a stupid assumption? Mabey he just wasnt in to "japanese imports" as a kid. Mabey all he knows is old american iron. Or mabey he is just a dumb redneck. But either way, turpintine? This comin from an empoyee of the government. jus playin :p

It's true, he is sort of a redneck mechanic. It's the first time I've been to that garage, and the only reason I went there is because its down the street from my house. My car has expired Minnesota plates and isn't insured, so I just decided to go there rather than drive across town. I am planning to go see him tomorrow. I complained to another mechanic from that shop over the phone, but I don't really think he believed me, and told me that I'd have to come back for him to look at it. What a joke of a mechanic! Anyways, I'll post my experience with the shop tomorrow.

Well, I didn't mention lighting it.

Although.....

Alrite, I just got back from the shop not too long ago. I parked my car outside and explained to him the mistake he made, and he didn't believe me that the hoses were just for excess water. I told him to pour water down that little hole, and he did and watched the water drip under the car. He found the whole thing pretty funny, and was laughing about his stuipid mistake. Anyways, he passed my car for the inspection right away, and didn't charge me. It could have been worse, I guess.
