I have a 95 Eclipse GST stick with no engine modifications. The car has 125k on it and the engine has about 80k. I do have a new O2 and map sensor, 255 lph Fuel pump and filter, turbo timer and a cone air filter.
I do know alot about cars and engines, but i am still weak on DOHC
I just recently installed both timing belts about a month ago. The car runs fine except a rough idle that I have been chasing down for a few months now. It ran the same after replacing the belts as before changing them. Yesterday I was driving my GST eclipse and was giving it alot of gas and switch form 1st to 2nd gear. I missed the gear and hit redlined for a split second. I drove home(about 2 more blocks) and stopped and took out the key. The turbo timer usually keeps the car on for about a minute and 30 seconds. I was working on a car next to my eclipse while it was on and it sounded fine(except for the bad idle).
Then when i went to start the car about an hour later the engine started to make some noise and not run very well. I put my foot on the gas to keep it running but it died a few seconds later. I tried this 5 times or so and it did the same thing every time. As for the noise it seemed like a light pinging(something like a gas knock). I was low on gas so i put a couple more gallons in with a gas can. This time the engine wouldn't try to start, but it did turn over.
This time the engine seemed like it was turning over too freely(like when you have your sparkplugs out and try to turn it over) So i look around the engine compartment and took off the top of the timing belt cover and noticed it was loosed. So I worked the car and got the timeing cover off and realigned the timing belt. I tried starting the car and still the enigine turns over freely but won't start.
Personaly I think the timeing jumped when i started the car and the few seconds I had it running the noise i heard was the valves being smacked against the top of the pistons. (A guess)
My question is, did i bend the valves or did something that i am overlooking causing me problems? Second, if i bend the valves did what can i do to check them without/with taking the engine apart? Third, again if i did bend the valves, did I screw up the pistons and the rest of the engine?
