is it a pipe that likely cracked? the water pump is located on the left side of the engine near the rad fill point, right?

I just had to replace mine the other day because the gasket went out on it. Was seeping right under the water pump pulley. So sounds like you need to replace the pump.
not hard just give yourself some time at first. It will likely take you a few hours if you havn't done it before. While you are there you may want to put a new timing belt on the car if it hasn't been done in a while.
