Hi, i was wondering if anybody has done an engine swap in a AWD first gen. My question is would it be possible to remove the engine from the engine compartment, without removing the transmission also, if i were to disconnect the tranny bolts and take the engine out through the top, or would i have to take it out the bottom, or remove both engine and tranny together?

Is it possible to leave it in... Ummm only if you could remove the flywheel and pressure plate from the block before taking it off. Without those being off, I don't see a way you could get the flywheel and pressure plate around the bellhousing of the transmission. You would WANT to support the transmission with some blocks or something if you did this. Letting it hang via the mount isn't a good idea. Also, by leaving the transmission in, that'd make it harder to put the engine back in.

I'd recommend taking the transmission out with the engine and just putting it back on when you put the engine back in. That's how I did it with my JDM.

yes, remove as a whole.
remove the powersteering pump and lay it over the headlight, this gives you some more room, and they have a bad habit of leaking after you pull the pressure line.

and when you hook your engine puller up, do it so hanging free, the engine side is a little higher than the tranny side, makes it easier to pull that way.

if you have ABS you will most likly remove the brake block unit from the mount so its suspended by the lines, and move it up and out of the way to clear the tranny. sometimes the abs unit mount needs to be removed for the tranny to clear, youll just have to get in there and make it work.
