I have a 1991 Laser RS Turbo FWD. I got it from a frien who was having problems with it and no money to fix it. It all startes when he tried to change the timing belt and couldn't re time it for anythig, so he brought it to a shop and thay put a new belt on and re timed it. Between 3 and 5 miles down the road it hopped time and screwed the head up. To make a long story shorter, the shop replaced the head. After the head was put on the stock turbo went bad, than he put on a used turbo, he got from a buddy, and it went bad, then he found an aoutomatic turbo, with had minor shaft play to begin with and it went bad. This is when I got the car. Last friday I got a little used turbo from a mechanic at my work. It had less than 1000 mile on it, with no shaft play. I put it on the car, and drove it 3 miles, and it had plenty of boost, then I turned around to come come, amd the car fell on its face. I took it back apart and found the turbo had alot of shaftplay. Now in theroy if it had not enough oil going to the turbo, wouldnt the impellor sieze on the shaft? This one didnt. THe turbo was sitting for a few year from who I got it from, would the bearings just go bad from sitting, or is it from not enough oil, cause i didnt pay the guy, so I need to know why it went bad.. Do they make a feed line kit that will bring the oil to the turbo from another location such as the oil filter instead of having to pump it up through the engine first? any help would be appreciated.
