I just had my water pump replaced and all the belts including my timing. The guy said that he'd have to reset the timing in a couple days because the belt needed time to stretch. He said that if I hear pinging to bring it back and he'd reset it. I'm hearing kind of a ticking noise coming from about the same place. Is that what he was talkin about when he said pinging?

I've never heard that about belt needing to "stretch". What brand did you use?
If it was me I'd time it right after I was done doing the water pump/belts replacment job.

Knocking you're hearing is probably your lifters, does it go away as the car warms up? Does it get louder/more intense as rpms go up?

A timing belt needs time to stretch, if you look at the manual it says allow"i think" 30 minutes after you put tension on the belt to retighten it. As for your pinging noise it my be knock if it is a ticking noise then it could be your lifters just needing time to get oil pumped up through them.

Well it won't usually make the noise when I first start it, but after I've been driving for a little bit and it gets warmed up is when it starts. It doesn't really get louder when the rpm's go up, but it does get louder when I push the accelerator down more.
