:cry hello, i blew my h gasket and pulled my head, prepped my head and block for the new gasket and put my head back on. now, i had to go somewhere and asked my friend to torque down my head studs for me and after telling him what order to do them in, i left and forgot to tell him how much torque and when i got back, he said it was done and i asked him how much torque he put on them and he asked if 140 was enough and i about died right there. car runs fine but what kind of damage am i looking at here? please tell me what to do. i bet somethings warped now and im gonna have another blown gasket soon huh? any advice will be much appreciated. thanks, charles

There's two people who need smarter friends.

Drain the coolant, back them off and re-torque to spec. Or, just leave them and wait. I think either way would turn out about the same. I just don't know if you're doomed or not.

Personally I would NEVER back them off - That's an AUTOMATIC leak - NEVER do that! - Leave it ALONE unless it leaks - & you & your little buddy really need to quit smoking that sh... :confused:

OMG What a moron.. What ever you do, don't back them off. Long as he torque them all in the right pattern and all to the same torque you should be ok. Another reason why I won't let my friends touch my shit. :talon:

If the head ever comes off again chuck the bolts away they will be stuffed (stetched). You can swap out the bolts one at a time because now the gasket is squashed to that torque it aint going to spring back!!

Torque != Clamping force

There is only so much clamping force that will be applied to a headgasket regardless of how much torque you put down. So that extra torque was turned into stud stretch. Good luck getting them out after a few heat cycles.

i would take the head off have it decked and put on a new gasket, along with head bolts, don't use the old ones after they've been cranked on.

i agree with just leaving it. I had a situation like that as well. We were putting my head on and my friend was torquing down the head. Well the idiot set the torque wrench wrong and torqued em to like 130ish. I decided to back em out right then and retorque. Sure enough, blew the headgasket like 3 weeks later. So I'd just leave it. Did you use ARP's or stock headbolts?

well, an update, the car smoked at idle and i gave her a compression test and got, from 4 to 1, 0, 150, 150, 150. i immedietly got a new head and arp studs and installed them. afterwards, no smoke ever, and 150 psi across the board. :thumb:
