was driving last night and went through a pretty good sized puddle.. and as i was going through it (slow almost at idle) my car started sputtering and popping and then stalled out..

I got it out and took the plugs out and turned it over a few times.. some water came out.. not a super huge amount but a nice mist of it..

I turned it over for a while.. getting the water out.. , but my starter started to die..

i tried it a few times with the plugs and crap in but the starter just more or less refused to enguage.. got it to turn over a couple times and the car started for a couple of sec.. but since I had the IC pipes off (to get water out) and it was prolly flooded with fuel aswell.. it only ran for about 5-6 sec and the stalled again..

I got it towed back to my house..

my oil looks ugly.. which im told is normal anytime ya get water.. so thats gotta be changed, I gotta go get a starter (soon as i can get a ride)

I have the plugs and wires out so everythig can air out a bit.

what else do i need to do? I figure with a good starter it will prolly fire up after a few GOOD cranks... i dont think i REALLY damaged anything major.. but im not sure.. never done this before.

any ideas? tips?

ok, I changed the oild and put in a new starter..

it fired right up.

BUT there was a loud clattering... like.. loud...

but after a short time it got quieter.. and quieter.. now you have to stand right over the motor to hear it..

car idles perfect, doesent smoke, oil pressure is good, fires right up on first crank..

dunno.. maby something in the head got wet and is clattering till it gets properly lubricated again..

OMG

Sounds like you may have dodged a bullet after getting water in your engine - hydrolock could have been just one of the deadly consequences.

I agree with Tallen, the noise you hear may very well be the infamous lifter tick. You may want to try some Mobil 1 synthetic with about 16 oz. of Lucas Oil Stabilizer to see if that eliminates the noise even further - (just don't overfill the crankcase).
