gear popping out of 4th

yeah, so when im driving all of a sudden my 4th gear just pops out, its doing it more and more often and i can barely keep it in 4th anymore it just makes a grinding noise and kicks out of gear. any ideas on what this is and how much its gonna cost to get it fixed?

no matter what gear i come from it grinds and kicks me out of 4th. it sucks cause now i cant race pretty much, 3rd only goes to 80ish then when i would go to 4th i have to go to 5th and its so sloooow
 
Gear selector fork is probably not in place correctly. This happened to me. Could also be bad synchro's (maybe, more likely the selector)
 
I'm not sure on that one, I havent fixed it myself, someone else did it for me... hopefully someone else will be able to answer that.
 
Hey man, I had the same problem too, it kept slipping out of 2nd. Then a month or so later, all the gears gave out and then it locked up.... yep time for a new tranny!!!! hey i would get it fixed IMMEDIATELY before you find yourself on the road and goin nowhere fast, like i did. its almost definate your tranny is gonna go soon, so take some advice from the guy whos really payin for it, either rebuild or replace (which is cheaper i found, because it just requires switching it out and putting a new one in.) just dont drive hard at all, stop racing for a while and fix it !!!!!
 
it is very critticle to keep ALL lubricants clean. while differencial and trans fluids last longer than engine oil, they are just as important.
this should be a regular maintanace (yearly) ... the new oil will not only lubricate, but will act as a cleaser, taking all the crap that may well be stuck in gears, which could be why your 4th is popping out
 
yeah it starting to get worse, and when i get out of my car it smells like some kind of oil or something it cant be good. im probably getting it checked out tomorrow hopefully i dont need a whole new tranny
 
You might give this a shot. I know a lot of people claim this is the reason their shifter popped out of 5th gear, but you never know. Granted, mine likes to move back and forth in 4th gear when I tap the gas and I tried it with no luck. But in any case, it just might help you. What it is, is you take the end off of your tranny and there are two huge bolts (36mm) that some have found to be hand tight. Tightening those back down solved their problem (mine were still very tight). Here's a page on how to do it. Took me about 1/2 hour to an hour.

i had the same problem but in 3rd. i put it in 3rd give it gas, take my foot off, and when i tryed to give it gas again it would pop out of 3rd and i'd end up in nutral. IT'S YOUR SYNCROS!! stop driving it and get it fixed before the whole tranny goes like mine did.
 
Your synchros don't keep your tranny in gear. It's the diamond shaped dog clutch teeth that the sleeve engages with that keep your car in gear. If the teeth get rounded or out of shape from lack of lubricant or contaminated lubricant then the car will pop out of that gear. the other thing that can cause this is worn shift forks.
I hope this is some good info, but what ever you do do overlook the simple stuf.
 
Mine pops out of 5th gear every 5 minutes or so, but only when going faster than 65mph. Keeping my hand on the shift stick heeps it in gear. I got two mechanic's opinions. One said it's the syncros and the other said the gear teeth have rounded off. No matter what- someone has got to take a look inside! Yeah, I know- I wasn't much help!! However IT WILL GROW WORSE. Take care of it now before you need a new tranny. I'm on my second one!
 
yeah well it turned out it was so bad i needed a new trans. my uncle is a mechanic and hes puttin in a new clutch and trans for me for only like 700$ though so thats cool. hes been having some problems though, he bought a used trans put it in. it didnt work! so he got another one, didnt work again! im like wtf, i want my car back =( ive been driving a ford escort wagon around for weeks, LOL. its so ghetto the exhaust broke and the exhaust comes out of the hood now and it sounds like a monster truck, and it makes this annoying squeaking noise as i drive, annnd the shocks are so bad if i hit a bump i bounce for like 1 minute.

anyway yeah, the trans on 1st gens suck =(
 
I had the same problem with my 95 GST. It actually ending up punching a hole through the wall of my transmission. Apparently there is a retaining nut that has a habbit of coming lose. When it does you can say goodbye to your transmission.
 
i have the same problem with my 1990 gst. i don't have 5th gear. i've been driving with 4th gear for about 8 months now i guess i better go get it rebuilt. when it started it used to just slip out know it won't even hold for 4 seconds.
 
I found out what my problem was.. it was the clutch master cylinder. The fuild heats up just enough the clutch wont disengage comletly so there for you can put it completey in gear and bam it pops out. Fixed now so its all good.. but now i have more problems.
 
I've been driving my car for several months with NO first gear. When it started popping out of gear at first it was just every now and then (like once a day). Then it starting doing it more frequently but I would just hold it in place with my hand on the shifter and it was fine. Then every now and then it would start trying to kick out along with grinding but I could still hold it in gear. Finally it got to the point where it won't stay in gear AT ALL. The entire process of first popout to no 1st gear took about a month. About a week into it I drained my fluid and refilled with Redline but obviously it only kept getting worse.

So, I've just been skipping 1st gear. Obviously no racing for now. I'm saving to get a new tranny. The last rebuild I had done was crap and I don't want to go that route again.

So what about all the posts in this thread saying that the tranny is going to totally let go at any moment. I never really thought about it from that perspective. Is something going to go critically wrong? I've put at least 6000 miles on it without using 1st gear at all with no apparent problems and the car takes off fine from second (ACT 2600, no boost off the line). Do I need to garage the car until I can get a new tranny? Or can I just keep pretending I have a 4-speed for a while?

I have the EXACT same problem with my 97 Gsx.. I have been doing the same thing you've been doing for a 1000 miles or so. Don't see how it could have any ill effects really. Haven't decided if im going to replace or rebuild my tranny yet though. Pretty tempting to have it rebuilt since John shep www.shepracing.com does a basic rebuild for like 900 bux. Never heard a single bad thing about his work ever.. what/how did you guys get your trans replaced/repaired?
 
My car falls out of 4th. What ive noticed is that it wont go all the way in gear if i shift normaly then it falls out as soon as i give it more throttle and if it try and force it the rest of the way in without leting it fall out and going to neutral itll grind like a beast. But if i slam it into gear from 3rd really hard then its fine, gotta shift really hard though....:( i always just sorta figured my synchro was going bad. I never really paid that much attention to it cause it seemed normal...I was gonna try some synchromesh to fix it, but i guess ill look at those two bolts while im at it...i cant really afford a full rebuild or new tranny right now. Any opinions on what i should do? any specific parts i should look at to replace or adjust??
