Strange Noise from Transmission... I think.. Detailed Description of the issue...

Okay, I have done a bunch of thread searches and I have found lots of interesting information but none that directly relates to my issues.


So here goes…. My issue.


I have a 95 GSX with about 104,000 mi. I have some mods, mostly engine piping and FMIC.

The issues I’m having is that I have a medium pitched hissing (sorta loud) sound coming from the car when the clutch is in the up position… not depressed. When I press the clutch in the sound fads away quickly and stays gone until I let the clutch up again. When I let the clutch up the sound fads back in quickly…. It’s very odd!

I would describe the sounds as being very similar to the sound you get from a skateboard… you know that roaring sound you get when you ride one… the sounds that the wheel bearings make.

The sound stays consistent and is not effected by throttle changes… meaning that when I throttle up (in neutral with the clutch up) the sound stays at the same speed as it was in idle. RPM changes have no effect on the noise. This noise happens if the car stopped or moving. You really hear it if you are parked next to a wall or something since the sound bounces of the walls.


The work that I have done on the car related to the transmission and preempting crankwalk:

I have replaced all the fluids with BG II Synth, both in the transfer case and the diffs.

Transfer Case Recall was done.

I have a brand new stock clutch and master cylinders… (Which I think needs adjusting.. I don’t like the en engage and disengage points)

I have a brand new throw-out bearing with less then 200 miles on it.

When I got the car… the dealer had replaced the transmission (This is where I think the problem is)

I don’t think its Crankwalk because I had the dealer check the car out for that. (Took the car to Mitsu and had then do a $70 used car inspection with special instruction to seek out any signs of crankwalk, they found nothing) I had Mitsu replace the throw-out bearing for good measure. ($500+)

But I could be wrong… maybe the crank has walked? So I thought I would bounce this off of the community to see what you guys thought!

Sounds like the throw-out bearing...i know its been replaced but thats the symptoms of a bad/installed wrong TOB.

Okay many thanks!! I will take it back to mitsu! Its been about six months since I had the work done but It has been less the 300 miles so I am sure they will give me heck but We will see... Thanks again!

has the same thing with my car but was the clutch plate itself. Once you got the disc off of the shaft, you could shake the disc and vibrated like a tamborine. I thought it was the t/o bearing as well but that did change anything.

Hey D Thanks for the info.... I guess I will be doing some clutch /TOB work... Let me ask this... Should I fix this ASAP or will it be okay to drive the car for a while like this? If its the clutch plate or throw out bearing will I do more dammage driving the car like this?

Again, I am doing all I can to prevent the Crankwalk beast or any other damage to the car.. so I guess I know the answer to this question but I just want to get the opinion of others...

Also I will say that the car seems to have a little trouble going into first gear. Not that it pops out or anything it just feels like you have to be ver precise getting the shift level in to the first gear gate. I have the shift kit mod that I need to install... maybe that will help with that issue.

Well this bites! More money more problems!
