Okay, when I start my car for the first time each day, for the first 5-10 minutes the car will knock under any throttle. This is not a couple counts of knock, but like 43, it's so bad the car bogs/stutters from timing being pulled so badly. Obviously, at 15-20% throttle, I don't think the engine is really knocking but, I'm worried it actually might be? I've obviously heard of phantom knock, but this happens EVERYDAY, and it's very frustrating for the first 10 minutes of operation. If I, for whatever reason, actually needed the car to move quickly to save my life, I wouldn't be here to type this, know what I mean?

I do try to give the car 2-3 minutes to warm up as well, and I'm not a moron and start the car up and start going WOT everywhere I go, I nurse the car until it reaches normal operating temperatures and then she's alright to drive. Oh well, any input would be greatly appreciated.

No one has any clue as to what could cause this? Or if this is normal, or really wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like more then just knocking. have you done a maitinence over haul? or checked for symptons of idle surge or leaking ecu caps? it sounds like you may need like one of those 60k maitience, new ecu caps, along with ur knocking problems. maybe u can just hope you mistaked knocking for lifter tick:thumb:

I had the motor rebuilt not even a year ago, however, it did the same thing before it was rebuilt. I have switched ECU's (with my brothers, also a 1g AWD) but I didn't check to see if it changed anything on a cold start up. I am having idle issues, but thats a completely other story, and may have to deal with a bad tank of gas, as Crankbender suggested. When the motor was rebuilt, all new gaskets and belts and vacum hoses, etc. were put on the car.

I don't believe I'm mistaking it for lifter tick, but it is possible. I cleaned my lifters about a year ago, and on start up ONE lifter does tick rather loud. So, like I said, it is possible the knock sensor is picking up that one damn lifter. Maybe I should replace that lifter and see if that doesn't take care of my cold-start-up-knock?

It's a brand new knock sensor and yes when the engine was rebuilt everything was checked and either cleaned/resurfaced/etc. or replaced. The pistons are not aftermarket, but were checked and cleaned.
