I already made an appointment with the mitsu dealership for this Friday. I explained the recall, the person I spoke to looked up my vehicle (90 GSX) and said it had not been serviced under the recall. Looking at the picks below do you think I have a case?

Here is what I am worried about. I just dumped 1500 bucks in mods to this car. I am gonna have to have it towed to the dealership. They are not gonna have the parts thus will have to order them. I am very worried about leaving my car at the dealership overnight..(see mods list) I am wondering how some of you handled that; meaning did you sit there and wait with your car until it was complete?? Did you drive it home until parts came in?? The dealership is only about 2 miles away from here. I am thinking of filling the t-case with some cheap gear oil and drive it up there. I am also worried that since the car is modded they wont even look at it.
I did not realize the t-case was leaking this bad since I have not owned the car for too long. The only way I found out was because I changed the fluid to BG Sycroshift which you see all over the floor in the first pick. I noticed a very small amount of fluid drain out. It was filthy dirty and very dark. I am thinking less then 4 oz actually drained out. So this means I was driving around with little to no gear oil in the t-case! However, I never noticed any problems. Thank goodness it did not lock up. Any suggestions and or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

fill the case and drive there--

have them order parts first so they are on hand when you bring it in

mod away you are going in on a recall not a warrenty

make an appointment in the mornig and you will have back same day

anything else?

If it's just the driveshaft yoke thats leaking fix it yourself as per the vfaq. It's easy and you don't have to worry about it anymore.

My appointment is set for 9am. I just called the dealership up and asked them to order parts to have them on hand. Each person I speak to over there has no clue what this t-case recall is. As a matter of fact, the other two local dealerships I spoke to also had never heard of this recall. I guess not too many people have taken their car in for this service...that or their just aren't enough awd owners in this area. Either way, I do have another question. I read that they are to test drive the vehicle to check for odd noises coming from the t-case. I have two problems with this:
A- The t-case has little to no gear oil
B- I dont have an exhaust on the car...just my 2.5 dp...(I was gonna take it to get the exhaust done but then realized I had a bad t-case leak and decided not to risk it)

Screw it...if they send me home I will just fix it myself.

Thanks...I think I am gonna order the drive shaft yoke and u joint from mitsu graveyard...just one more question. What type of noises does a bad t-case, or one that is on its way out make? The only thing I noticed when driving my car was a noticeable whine...mostly in third and fourth gears. That is basically it...no cluncking or hesitation. My guess is my t-case is still okay... Thanks again for all the help

Like crank said, let them fix it. Don't order anything. They'll fix whatever needs to be fixed under the recall. If the transfer case has undue wear on it due to the leak, they'll replace that too. Let them do all the work.

...I already ordered the drive shaft yoke, u-joint and t-case seal from Mitsu graveyard. Cost me 68 bucks including 2 day shipping. That is about 18 bucks more than I would have paid for the tow truck/flat bed to tow it to the dealer. As far as time goes it will probly take me about 1-2 hours to fix it vs waiting at the dealer for 3-6 hours. Worse case scenerio, if I have problems with it leaking again or the t-case acts up, I will throw my old parts back on and take it to the dealership. The main thing was I did not feel comfortable leaving my car at the dealership with all the "new" mods and gauges. I have heard some horror stories about things like that going missing after the car was at the dealership. Eitherway, thank you for the help.

TT

Dude drive it to the dealer......you don't have to tow for 3 miles because of that fluid leak.

Take pictures of the car with the service manager there....they are liable if anything gets stolen while the car is in their posession.

What if something inside the Tcase is messed up? It isn't worth the trouble on a recall just have them fix it. Many dealers will just replace the whole xfer case to be sure!

Just let the dealership fix it. ITS FREE. Plus if they feel your transfer case is messed up enough, they'll replace it for a NEW one. Personally I'd stay at the dealership and keep a close eye till they were done. I dont trust them for anything.

But if you want to go ahead and tackle it, to each his own. Good luck :dsm:

I disagree with those of you who think it's the driveshaft yoke leaking. I had the same leak and was told that there is no seal in that side of the transfer case that the yoke slides into. However the VFAQ said something about a brass/metal seal in there. I eventually swapped transfer cases and the leak went away. Therefore the leak at that end was caused by a sealing device in my old transfer case.

There is a seal the yoke slides into...and there is a brass seal on the inner side of the yoke. Either way I am replacing both the t-case seal and the drive shaft yoke with brand new units along with a new u-joint. I never had any problems with my t-case, only a slight whining sound that I figure is due to the awd. I may just pull the t-case completely off and inspect it. If all is well, I will re-grease it and re install using synthetic fluid. Shouldn't take but 2 hours....hopefully.

dthquazi1, I would make sure your t-case has fluid. It may have already dumped everything out if your seals are bad enough. Look at this picture....all that fluid on the my garage floor dripped out with the car just sitting there. I imagen it would have gushed out if I had driven it.

This is what i got from the previous link.

The yoke has no fluid on it at all. When i had it off and i tipped it upside down however it took awhile to get it to come out. I tested the front wheels (spin them in the same direction) when all four wheels are off the ground before i took the t-case off. I put the e-brake on too. The front wheels didn't turn, so i let the brake off and spun them again and all four spun.

Sorry about the link...if you go the my first message on this thread click on the first link...that one should work. Again, I paid 15 bucks for that mess on the floor.

If I understand you correctly, it sounds like the yoke is not leaking...did you check the seal on the t-case?

The yoke and seal are warrantied for the life of the car, so Mitsu says. You can have it done again if need be.

Providing that it's the same case that came with the car. I had mitsubishi take a look at mine and tell me that the case didn't match up to the vin number on the car so they wouldn't do it.

but i need the noise fixed. I am losing power and a loud noise is comming from somewhere. It was diagnosed as a output to t-case shaft but i pulled it and they are both fine. Still got a noise. Could it be the clutch. it is a brand new feramic. The tranny job has been done for about 1000 miles and i wore it in. I had just gotten it tuned and it ran great till i got onto the freeway and my third gear ground a little and now i have the noise.

I am completely screwed then (as for the recall anyway)...my t-case and tranny were replaced with 92 units...oh well at least the parts from mitsu graveyard should be coming today. Now I am surely doing this myself.

dthquazi1- sorry to say but the sounds like a tranny issue. If you are lucky it is just your clutch slipping and or chatter. Most likely it isnt a loss of power as much as you not being able to get the power down. To be on the safe side, I'd check all the little things first. Follow this link to see if your t-case is leaking.
