crank/cam sensor question?

I just got my motor back together after a broken timing belt incident and ran into a problem when reinstalling the cam sensor on my 92 GST. The sensor will fit onto the cam 2 different ways. One side on the sensor has a hash mark, does it mean anything? I'll have to get a timing light to get the timing perfect but will the car start if it's too far off? I'm not sure how much movement will vary the timing. Thanks.

Hi,
you can have it in completley backwards and it will start and run.
look in your haynes book, it says someting like the cam gear pins pointing at 12o clock, the end of the cam sensor installs to the front of the car or soemting like that, double check it.

also, some cams have a mark on the cam itself where the mark on the sensor meets. to help align

if its backwards, youll never get the base timing right.

Actually with the wasted spark method used in our cars your plugs spark once every 180 degrees on the cam. So if you have it exactly 180 degrees out it should work just fine .

im gonna have to disagree.

my car was running ok, a fellow tuner decided my cam sensor was in backwards, he switched it, and it wouldnt boost atall. until i swapped it back.

but who knows.
