Carlisle,
i am in the process of changing the wonderful valve cover gasket. i was looking around the head to make sure i hadn't dropped anything (it was covered up with t-shirt). i happened to notice what appears to be some damage (first picture). i checked the opposite side (second pic) and it is not the same. i have only done a rebuild once, and head rebuild once so i have not noticed it before. my question is for those that have an extra head lying around or see them/work on them alot. its a 1g head. i have not noticed any problems except for the stupid lifter tick and an intake manifold gasket leak. the cars driver normally. the first pic wouldn't focus well. i'd appreciate any insight.

this pic looks like normal casting. it is hard to see so i outlined it. the other may be but appears damaged.

could have been bad before but it appears to be just a flake off of a gasket. i would imagine that its not to bad as long as you find the flake before repairing.
