Should this occur right after a new head / head gasket install?

I just got a new head installed and if I hold the throttle to 2500 to 3000 RPM this happens:

I have only put about 10 very gentle miles on the car.


Is this oil or water?

Is this normal?

Is there break in time?

looks like oil, water be more white. did it do this b4 the head and gasket change? check your oil to see if any water in it. take cap off thermostat housing to see if there is any smoke coming out of there or bubbles when car is running. you also need to retouque the head bolts after about 25 miles or so.

does it smoke at idle? if not maby its the turbo.
 
Anytime you go in to the engine you will get some oil in the combustion chamber. I would recomend driving it for about 1,000 miles or so and then re-evaluate. Also, 2500 to 3000 RPM at a dead stop is a bit more than what is considered "normal operation"

It's possible that the turbo is starting to go but don't forget about valve stem seals as well. Were they replaced when you went in to the engine?

I recomend driving it more and re-evaluating it again at a later date.

Yeah. I got a stage 2 head from Bj's cylinder heads.

The PTE does look a little tore-up even though I've only had it on the car for 1200 miles. I noticed that the bottom bolt on the turbine housing on the PTE had dried up oil caked on. Maybe the PTE is starting to leak oil into the turbine housing which in turn would blow some smoke out the exhaust... If thats the case then I really think PTE blows. 1200 miles for a $995 turbo? Man, it wouldve been better to go 20g + tial.
 
Hmm..

Does anyone know if the car would be able to pass the sniff test with this smoke? What does the sniff test look for, unburned fuel? My car is AWD so they cant put it on the machine that spins the wheels while it sniffs.

Any comments are greatly thanked. :D
 
Most emissions analyzers are set-up to detect Hydrocarbons, NOx (nitrates of oxygen) and one other component. Hydrocarbons (HC) being the most looked at. While burning some oil typically will not cause a vehicle to fail inspection it IS an indication of a poorly maintained vehicle or failing part. If it's just a little oil that alone will not fail you.

Well it looks like the smoke has decreased dramatically. I'm gonna see about getting inspected here in the next couple days.
