temp gauge or serious problem?

the other night i was driving along and i happened upon a 2g gst and we did a little freeway race. we were up to about 135 or so for a minute and when i looked down at my temp gauge after the race (about 5 mins later) the temp gauge was all the way cold. its done that one time before when i did the same thing. but it came back up. this time the gauge never came back up. the rest of the night (about 40 miles) til i got home. i was even stopped half the time, it would go up a little, but then go down even when going only 20 mph. it acts fine any other time. could it be the gauge or what. BTW it was about 25 degrees outside at the time. any suggestions would be appreciated.
