is my turbo shot?

hey, there is a huge rattling sound from my engine bay when boost is building (1000-2800 rpms) but when im at full boost, it stops. Im still getting boost but the sound is really bothersome. The car was doing fine under boost until i started to slow down and then the temp started to rise. I also started to see smoke, so i stopped and there is a TON of smoke coming the turbo area. My mechanic said that oil was getting into the turbo and it was about to go. Would i have an oil leak getting onto my turbo and thus creating the smoke? Is my turbo on it's last leg? I checked and i do have some shaft play. Thanks for the help. If you need more info let me know.

Your mechanic is right. The turbo has both oil and water cooling. Eventually the seals in it wear out and oil or water get into it and come out the exhaust (and/or into engine) as dark or white smoke.
