okay I just got done re-building the motor. it is a 90 6 bolt. I had already had the motor in the car before and it started great. Now that it is back in the car all it will do is grind on the flywheel making a LOUD banging sound. I have done the following:

replaced the starter
trying shimming it so i would hit it better
pushing it down while tightening the bolts.
made sure the flywheel is tight (through inspection shield)

but the noise is still there. the only thing I have not done is replace the battery, it was dead to the point that you could make post contact with no sparking. So I am thinking MAYBE it does not have enough amperage to make the starter grab.. but it does turn over and start on the rare occasion it grabs for a turn or 2.

Any help would be greatly appriciated

still need help! and add to the list of things tried is a new optima red top battery...

now it turns over REALLY fast but still just pops and does not grab the flywheel

It appears that you have 1 of 3 problems here

#1 the teeth on the bendix or the flywheel are ground down and therefore no longer grab.

#2 you have something aligned wrong. Starter bolts should have a step twords the head where there are no threads and it has a larger diameter than the od of the threads. If you have the wrong bolts in there make sure you change them immediately. Are you absolutely sure you used the same bolts for the starter as the ones that came off it or did you just use some bolts that fit? If you arn't sure find a dealer with some of the right ones and compare them to the ones you are using...Using the wrong bolts can damage both the starter and the flywheel.

#3 the starter is bad and the bendix doesn't engage as it should.
