tranny problems.... Low on fluid??

My car has been sitting on jack stands since November, and I finally got it down and took it for a spin yesterday..... Not good news..... Here's my quick question... If a transmission was low and/or empty on tranny fluid, what would it do or how would it perform? What are some symptoms of being low/empty?? AND if a tranny was leaking, what are the two most common places and what could cause it to begin leaking. I'm sorry for all the potentially "dumb" questions. I honestly know very little about trannys. All info is greatly appreciated.

Probably the most common leak area is the drain plug.

If you have a leak, it will be rather obvious.

As for low fluid level, you would probably get terrible shifting feel. Can't really help you there, as I check my fluids regularly to prevent situations like this.

So, how do you check your tranny fluid level?? There is no dipstick, right? So do you just pop open the fill plug and look into it??
