Hi guys,

I've got a problem with my '91 AWD. I've done a search here, tried the VFAQ, and 1000 Top DSM questions without success. I'm hoping someone might have an idea or two about my problem.

She will not shift into first, second, or reverse while running.
Clutch pedal is very light. Both master and slave cylinders were replaced in '02. My ACT2100 was installed last spring.

Transmission fluid is a deep brown. I personally change the transmission fluid (GM Synchromesh) myself, almost as often as I change the oil. That was last done in late January.
Clutch fluid reservoir fluid is black, and about a centimeter below the top fill line.

My guess is that the synchros are worn down to nothing. Other than that, I'm really not sure. DSM shops in upstate NY are nonexistent. My only choice so far would be to visit the dealer, which I'd rather not do.

I appreciate any help or suggestions.

Thanks,

- Jim

I had this exact same problems a few weeks ago. One day my car wouldn't go into 1st, 2nd or R and the clutch was really light like you say, not engaging until it reached the floor. We fixed it by bleeding a good amount of the transmission fluid out and then refilling it. I can't remember why we bled the transmission fluid (my dad is car savvy, I'm not), but it definetly fixed it, as I've had no problems with it in the few week since we did it. I'll ask him when he gets home and then give you a more accurate analysis of the problem.

Another thing to try is bleeding the clutch. Same thing happened to me, your clutch fluid should NOT be black. Try flushing the whole system(it's like bleeding your brakes) And use only NEW brake fluid. You can have the best synchros in the world, but unless your clutch is dis-engaging, you won't be able to get into gear while stopped.

Thank you both for the suggestions.

This weekend I'll bleed the system and change the fluid.
I promise to let you know the results.

Thanks again,

- Jim

I think I found the problem:

I guess this is what happens when you drive through a foot and a half of snow. Looks like the clamp was torn off, along with the boot. The black clutch fluid was leaking out.

Didn't have enough Synchromesh and brake fluid to do the transmission and bleed the clutch. I'll do that tomorrow, if it doesn't snow or drop forty below zero.

I'll keep you updated.

Well, its nice to know that you won't be buying a tranny YET.

Now be nice to her so you can get to Charlotte again.
