Hey everyone, I apologize for this being a long post in advance. Here is my situation:

I just swapped in a good condition 14b to replace the old one in my car. The old one had LOT of shaft play. Before the swap, I wasn't making boost and whiteish smoke would pour out of the exhaust as RPMS increased. When I say pour out, I mean is was filling the street with smoke. Now, the car makes some boost but the white smoke still pours out as the RPMS rise. There is a little smoke coming out at idle, but once I hit the gas it gets ridiculous. The smoke is white with a bluish tint. Occasionally, I will see some brown smoke, but that is rare.

Now for my question. What is wrong? Are the rings bad? Valve stem seals? Too much oil leaking into the intercooler? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

It seems the consensus is that the turbo is bad. However, I just replaced a badly blown turbo yesterday with one with no shaft play or end play. I'm thinking the rings are bad, but I am no mechanic. Thanks for the help

white smoke is usually something to do with coolant entering the piston chamber, but when my walbro 255lph fuel pump clogged my pump screen this past summer, it cause my car to run extremely lean and also produced white smoke at idle and increased as rmps increased. I have seen many a color of smoke bellow out of the back of my DSM, and it usually means I get to upgrade parts.

my car is doin the same...how is coolant entering the piston chamber....
when i rev the car more white smoke comes out...its not drivable in the street too much smoke......

i dunt know what to do

ruf_round_edges, did you ever get this straightened out? My buddy's car ('90 Laser FWD Turbo 5-spd) is doing the same thing. Exhaust is smoking with a bluish white tint and get worse as the engine speed increases. Its just as bad as you described, fills up the whole street.

Haven't had a chance to do a compression test, but I checked the spark plugs and they look nice and oil free. If I park facing uphill for like 15 minutes there will actually be a few drips of oil that has come out the exhaust and the muffler end pipe has a thick old coat of oil in it. Makes me wonder how this oil comes out the exhaust but doesn't burn up.

Apart from the rediculously large cloud of smoke, the car idles and run great. Pulls hard, although when under boost at WOT, there is a kind of pinging sound similiar to what you hear when you have bad gas. I had him fill it up with the 100 octane Sunoco stuff to no avail.

Any comments people?

It was actually a blown turbo. There was so much shaft play, it was ridiculous. I replaced the turbo and it still smoked for a while, but it was just residual oil that was still in the intercooler. Check the turbo for shaft play first.

Did a compression test today, from the passenger side to the driver side the compression was 152, 155, 152, and 157. The car has just over 100,000 miles on it.

I also noticed that the engine shakes a lot when it turns over. It's not so much while it is cranking, but right when you let off the ignition and the engine turns off and actually starts up. That is when it shakes. It kinda shakes the whole car in the front.

Once again there was not oil on the spark plugs themselves, but I forgot to mention before that the area around the spark plugs was covered in oil. I checked for crack closely and did not find any. The valve cover was pretty clean up around the oil fill cap, so my guess is that it is coming through that small (breather?) hole in the valve cover near the spark plug that is furthest to the driver side.

Can/does oil come out of that little hole? If so, is this cause by bottom end pressure like when the PCV valve is malfunctioning or when the dipstick pops out?

What next? I guess the turbo needs to be checked...
