i am changing my timing belt and i went to make sure the oil pump pully that also runs the rear balence shaft was alined right but the pully doesnt spin freely. I can turn it with my hand but i cant spin it. I was wandering if this was normal cause on the vfaq website they says to line it up so the timing mark is pointing upward and then let it go and if it spins a certain way it is alinged right and vice versa. Please help i need to get my car back on the road and need to know what to do or how to fix it. thanks.

Okay, the oil pump pulley has a balance shaft that goes all the way through the engine. It will not spin freely, you are actually turning a long metal rod with counter weights on it. Point the arrow staight up, if it falls on it's own to the left, towards the point, then you have it in time right. If it falls the other way, just do one rotation and check again. Make sure you change out your balance shaft belt too, cause that thing needs replaced at the same time you do a timing belt, and it can snap just as easy if not easier, and it will take the timing belt with it more than likely, and there goes your head/valves/possibly pistons.

yeah i know you can aim the timing mark on the oil pump sprocket up and see what way it falls, im saying when i point the timing mark up it just stays there it cant spin freely enough to fall one way or the other, do you see what i mean. The car has been sitting for about a two months, is that what could be the problem?

There are bearings that they run on inside the motor, they could be seized up. If you don't want to redo those, then there is another way. There is a bolt in the back of the block. It is at the bery bottom by the motor mount located on the firewall side. Take it out, and put a phillips screwdriver in the hole. You should be able to feel where the balance shaft is, if you can't get the screwdriver in, the counter balance is in the way, turn it until you can get the screwdriver in, and then you know what side it needs to be on. Hope this helps, let me know. -Ross
